2.7 TDV6 Struggles to start |
|
Hi all, first post on here!
I bought a 2006 D3 the other week and she’s been perfect so far apart from the fact the first start of the day takes a little while (5+ seconds of cranking), when it does eventually fire up a load of white smoke comes out of the exhaust briefly (I assume it’s just the unburnt diesel from cranking) and it then runs fine for the rest of the day, I can come back 4 hours later and it starts on the turn of the key.
My initial thought is glow plugs? However it’s about 10deg c here so not too cold, but I’ve also seen a lot of people mention issues with the fuel system, perhaps blocked fuel filter too?
If anyway can point me in the right direction that would be great
I’ve ordered a controller for the FBH so I guess if it is the glow plugs I’ll be able to confirm that by pre-heating the engine.
Thanks
Car has 151k miles on the clock and from what I can see in the service history the glow plugs have never been replaced, battery and alternator have been replaced a couple of times with the last time in 2019

Just to check, you do wait for the glow plug light to go out before cranking?. I find that the engine usually starts just like a petrol car unless the weather is cold so it's easy to forget.

Yep wait for the light to go out, I’ve tried cycling it on and off a few times too waiting for the light to go out each time and it doesn’t make any noticeable difference

Hey Tomm661
Sounds to me like faulty glow plugs or even possibly a leaky injector/fuel system issue allowing air in the system overnight.
My first point of call would be to check the resistance of the glow plugs and see if you have an open circuit or short circuited.
Have you plugged it in and checked for error codes?
