If it'll do 22mpg then you're not going to be far off the diesel in terms of actual cost.

The EU6 models are noticeably more responsive. LR finally got the mapping for the engine and gearbox right with those.
In theory they didn’t produce any more bhp/torque but in practice they feel more powerful and smoother. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

If your main criteria is as little to go wrong as possible, then a newer vehicle is not for you. You need an older vehicle with less complicated mechanicals and less electronics. To be honest I am eyeing up D2s again. Just enough electrickery for comfort such as CC, heating, AC, electric windows, central locking, etc.
But basic enough to be able to fix in the driveway no matter what goes wrong. Td5 doesn't snap cranks either and is very reliable. V8 thirsty but very basic engine as well.

Interesting thread.
I aim quite please with my 2015 LR4 HSE. 3.0 SCV6.
And though my friend is pleased with his 2010 5.0... I wouldn't trade mine for that strictly by age and miles.
Oh, and mine goes off road. I mean really off road. His doesn't.
Cheers. 2015 LR4 HSE Lux Aintree Green
