Inexpensive fault code readers? |
|
Hi all
I would like to buy a fault code reader for my LR4, but don’t want to spend a fortune. Question: has anyone tried and found one from the likes of Aliexpress / Temu to be any good?
For example:

I had a look on their website. Which unit in particular; they all seem fairly expensive (well, more than budget, anyway)? 2016 LR4 3.0 SDV6 HSE

Hi Cresco
I'm also in NZ (Taranaki)
I brought a GAP IID BT
I brought mine from a company in Australia approx 3 years ago. From memory it cost me approx $1100 NZD, plus postage. A bit high initial cost, but mine has well and truly paid for itself, particularly if your local indie garage or auto electrician charges approx $100 every time you want a code read.
Anyway website for company in Oz (Queensland) is:

Thanks Blake. I was hoping to be a tight a@#se and buy one off Temu for under $100 🤣. Not sure I could get $1100 over the mark with the other half? 2016 LR4 3.0 SDV6 HSE

Yeah I have to admit it took a bit of convincing to get it over the line with my wife.
The other thing I've learnt is if something needs fixing, it's good to be able to turn up to the mechanic and tell him what the issue is, armed with the codes and a bit of background knowledge from this excellent forum.
Recently I has a EGR with integrated MAP (manifold atmospheric pressure) sensor throw fault codes on my petrol D3 engine. My local garage quoted me approx $1200 for new one plus fitting. I was able to source a genuine LR part out of UK for under half that online. Only took about 10 days to post from UK. I still got garage to fit, but saved myself approx $600.
I had similar experience with O2 sensors. I got Denso branded ones at 1/2 price my garage was quoting. A site sponsor of this forum is a good one to look up for parts.
Cheers

Yup, been there: done that with my old D3 and service agents!
I’m considering biting the bullet on this unit, but wondering whether it is missing any features which render it not-so-useful

See what comments other members come back with.
I recall someone once saying the cheap ones have pins which are too large or can cause issues with the ECU.

you could try the Carly scanner or the OBDII scanner. Both plug in bluetooth modules with an app on your phone and IIRC both are around the £100 ballpark here in UK. 2011 D4 XS 305 MY12 - gone but not forgotten
