[Guide] USB Port Replacement in AUX+USB Panel

Hey all!

My Discovery 4 (2014) came with a broken USB port in the upper glovebox AUX+USB panel when I got it. Apparently a flash drive fused itself in place and came out with some of the port -- not sure how common this is?

I set out to repair mine and thought I'd write it up, hoping it can help someone else in the future as these parts are becoming more scarcely available Very Happy.
For reference here are part numbers for the single USB+AUX port panel: LR051020, DH2219C166CA. Spares exist but can be quite pricy for what they are (hovering around £60 when I looked) but the repair costed me shy of £10. Note: watch out if you consider a used part, a couple I saw on eBay had the same damage on the USB port!

What you'll need

  • A soldering iron
  • Some solder (ideally thin strand)
  • Desoldering pump (or other desoldering means, I just prefer the pump)
  • A new USB port (!Read on!)


The USB port
There are innumerable manufacturers making this style of USB port, but Land Rover, in their infinite wisdom, have chosen a very particular one that is unique. All but this model of USB port I could find have pins the same way, whereas the one used by JLR has them reversed. I learned that the hard way after some... misadventures...

The part you'll need for this unit (check with yours to be sure) is MOLEX's 48204-0001. This is currently listed in a few places (no affiliations):

However, despite the part being inexpensive, all of the above distributors charge a small fortune (~£10) for "handling" or shipping small orders.
On eBay, listings come and go, but you can find this port for ~£7 shipped:


Steps
1. Take the left passenger air vent out. In my Disco 4 it's held on by clips only, but I believe Disco 3 has a small screw at the bottom accessible with the lower glovebox open, which needs to be taken out first. Grab the unit from the bottom firmly and pull towards you (it's held on by metal clips which usually go everywhere).

2. Reach through the opening to the upper glovebox side, and press the clips to release the USB+AUX panel. It is held on by 3 clips on the top and bottom, you can just press the top three and angle it out. Remove the connector and voila, it's out!

3. Remove the face from the panel (6 clips) and take out the circuit board

4. Remove the clear plastic backing from the board, and start de-soldering the port. Tip: Begin from the port's four support struts, before desoldering the four thin USB pins. Though counter-intuitive, adding a little bit of fresh solder on the support and USB pins, and letting it melt through (i.e. keep the heat on it for a bit) usually helps it get sucked out easier.

5. Remove the USB port, and clean the contacts (again, flowing some fresh solder and removing usually does the trick!)

6. Insert and solder on the new USB port (do not force it! If it is not going in, find the pin that's resisting and either clean it or heat it up as the port goes in)

7. Inspect the solder joins, making sure none are bridged in ways they weren't before. Put it all back together, and its done! Cool


Further troubleshooting

  1. If at any point a short circuit occurs involving the USB port, a DTC will be logged and the port will be disabled (hopefully without damage to the media unit). You have to lock and unlock the car before the port is re-enabled, but the DTC will remain.
  2. If a short circuit occurs every time the ignition is on with the repaired unit connected, it may be that one of the USB ports is shorted with another, or with one of the adjacent pads.


This is a very minor repair if that, but I hope in the long run this helps someone! Smile
