Orange Mobile Phones in France |
|
Looking for a bit of advice here from somebody who either lives in France or travels there regularly. Number one daughter is moving to France for a year as part of her University course and of course she will be unable to cope unless she has a mobile phone Now in this country she has an Orange phone on contract but what I am trying to find out is if she goes to France will she be able to put a French Orange sim in her phone and will it work. I thought by ringing Orange in this country they would be able to tell me but seems they either don't know or wont tell me.
I am open to any other helpful suggestions people may have regarding mobiles in France.

Screwed either way. Country to country txt or calls are daylight robery.
You could dump orange and get a Vodafone sure signal box, she would plug this into the Internet in frogland and it routes her mobile traffic through it. E.g. A little bit of England as far as the mobile is concerned. So txt and calls are charged as if you are in England.

Pom's idea is a brilliant one.
However the way this works may not last long so don't rely on it. The usual suspects like skype exist but true mobile coverage end to end usually ends up with an in country sim.

Thanks for the replies, Pom, I'll look into the Vodafone sure signal box but not sure whether she is going to have internet as she hasn't found anywhere to live yet! (she leaves in 8 days ) D3 Bev I think it will probably end up with her buying a phone over there and getting a PAYG sim from one of the French operators.

easiest method still relies on a wifi connection, make sure she has an Iphone and you have similar then use the builtin facetime. no charges.

Thanks for another suggestion Pom unfortunately i don't think it's me she wants to keep in touch with
Been looking at some of the places she is going to have a look at in Nice and they all appear to have wifi included (just so bloody expensive ) So it looks like either Facetime or skype will have to be her main means of contact. Thanks Again

We went abroad - Spain, France & Belgium - this year for three months and did some research before we went. I ended up getting a global sim card from a company called 0044. This allowed us to receive mobile phone calls whilst abroad at no charge to us.
Usually you have to pay to receive your calls abroad on a british sim card.
The costs of outgoing calls and texts were the same as if we had used our british sim card. The sim card just uses whichever service provider is in range, so there is no issue on coverage.
Therefore we just took and old spare phone with us on which to receive the mobile calls. The charge to the caller is the same as if they had called your mobile in the UK.
So, this would be a cost effective way of receiving phone calls whilst being away for a long time. You can also top up direct from the phone etc.

I have been in France for a month, I usually use my unlocked 3 mifi dongle and buy a French Orange SIM card and use their Mobicarte pay as you go system, but this time I had a problem connecting the 3 dongle to our iPads. To overcome the problem I just bought an French Orange mifi dongle (Clie) for 89 Euro's, all you have to do is buy a top up (recharge) Mobicarte card from most supermarkets or Orange store, they cost:-
€5 for 75mb valid for 7 days
€10 for 150mb valid for 15 days
€15 for 225mb valid for 1mth
€25 for 450mb valid for 2mth (+€5 bonus credit)
€35 for 675mb valid for 3mth (+€10 bonus credit)
€50 for 975mb valid for 4mth (+€15 bonus credit)
€75 for 1500mb valid for 4mth (+€25 bonus credit)
€100 for 2250mb valid for 5mth (+€50 bonus credit)
All you do is ring a freephone number, enter your dongle phone number then enter the top up card number and off you go, the beauty of the dongle is that 6 computers can use it at the same time, so we have been able to have our iPhones and iPads wifi'd up continuously, obviously within the 30mtr range of the dongle, or put it in your pocket and take it with you, a lot cheaper than my roaming £1 a mb cost on O2
It takes the worry away from scary bills for data on return to the UK plus let's you surf the Internet whilst travelling to find camp sites or other googling.
Very easy to use, charge it up, or keep it plugged into a 12v socket, ensure credit on it, it will then emit a wifi signal for 30mtrs surrounding it, link your phone or iPad or computer to the wifi signal (up to 6 items can connect to it), enter the password and off you go

If she's had her phone for more than 12 months, you should e able to get it unlocked for free. If not, most phone companies charge about £20. She should then be able to use any sim she likes. Which sim is best is another question though! D4 XS MY12 Galway
