Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction with this problem I have!
My glow plugs are not working, and haven't been for the 3 years I've owned the car, I have about the last 6 weeks been getting an intermittent 'restricted performance' Amber warning light show up on the dash, which I have never had before, so I checked for cracked manifold as is usually related, and the manifold seems fine. So I looked down a different road.
When I last changed my battery 12 months ago ish, I noticed there where was a wiring loom with 2 plugs that wasn't connected which I didn't think at the time was anything to worry about as I had no running issues. But after some glow plug related fault finding I realised these 2 plugs where for the glow plugs one on each cylinder bank. I thought, ideal that must be the problem, plugged them in thinking they had been innocently forgotten about to no avail.
Recently had and oil and filter service done by a local mechanic and asked him to see if he could plug in his diagnostic tool to see what was what. There where quite some faults relating to glow plugs, I don't know what they were exactly, but they got cleared and car was test driven.
Plugged in again to find 6 errors for open circuit to glow plugs, (I'm not sure how suitable his diagnostic tool is for this particular car) but this seemed to make sense as the car was not starting well last winter in really cold weather less than 4 degrees.
I have no glow plug light on the dash when turning on the ignition, also using a clamp meter I have no current traveling to each glow plug after testing each of the 6 wires on the top on the manifold, after cycling the ignition.
I'm thinking the glow control unit maybe at fault, which seems to be a relay come ecu, I opened up the relay, all looks OK and I am getting 12v into the relay on the main big cable, but nothing out, even manually operating the relay doesn't allow power to the 6 glow plug wires as they are fed via the circuit board wizardry.
How do I check this unit and where do I go next? Is it worth spending 50 quid on a new relay and hoping it's OK?

Roger,
I am sure other more knowledgeable people will answer soon, but I will say that you should either invest in a diagnostic tool suitable for your D4 or find a good Indie who has the correct tool. Before spending money on parts it is essential to have your error codes read so that proper diagnostics can be performed.
When I purchased my D4 I also purchased a Gap IID, which has saved me money during ownership.

Thanks for your reply, I have had a gap tool on a previous d3 I had, was a superb tool. And yes I agree, propper diagnosis is the way forward.
I am however unfortunately going to be selling the disco once I have ironed out this glow plug issue and given it a fresh mot.
I'm looking for anyone who may have had a similar problem, is the hope I might save a bit of money, but I will likely need to get it looks at by a specialist.
If I was keeping it, I would have a iid2 tool for it, as I like many on this forum like to do my own repairs where possible to keep running costs down a bit
