Extending the life of my 2016 Discovery 4 - what should I do

I’m 81 years of age and have owned Land Rover 4x4s continuously since buying a 2 year old 3 door Classic in the early 1970's.

My current 2016 D4 Landmark has been fastidiously maintained and has now covered 56k miles.

I am now contemplating what to do about motoring henceforth.

Ideally I would prefer a petrol engined equivalent of my Landmark which probably means a second hand FFRR.

I am however considering what I could do to ensure that my current Disco “lasts me out”, and how much this might cost.

As I have said the car is, so far as I can tell, in excellent condition. It has been serviced more frequently than required by the LR service schedule, and has in the last year or so had:-

New propshaft
New suspension compressor
Gearbox flush & both diffs and transfer box oil change by Bodsy

I anticipate that, as I get older my annual mileage will probably be between 6k & 8k miles, as during the summer I use my Mercedes convertible when the weather permits.

The question is what steps should I take now, in terms of preventive maintenance, to ensure the D4 is suitable for use for many years to come?

The first which comes to mind is to treat the underside, all cavities etc.. probably with Dinitrol, or something similar. Recommendations, particularly specialists to do the job most welcome.

Ref the rustproofing. Have a Chat to forum sponsor Zagato aka Chris Calvert. He’s not too far from you, Billingshurst. He did my L320. It’s a job that no doubt could be DIY but I’d prefer to trust an expert!

Might it be worth considering a Japanese import in that case - rust free and most of them seem to be petrol.

Happy to recommend him. Had my car for a week so you need to get transportation sorted out. Handy railway station near him.

At that rate you should start a production line of conversations!

Thanks for your comments. I would be up for a 5l V8 D4 import, but would really like a very late one with very low mileage.

Those which I have seen are usually much older than my D4 & with a similar or greater mileage.

I would like a car with the rotary gear selector if possible.

I would also like heated front seats & a heated steering wheel, but understand that I am likely to have to retrofit these to a RHD D4 V8 import.

I probably should make contact with Ross Burcham at :- https://www.burchamcarsourcing.co.uk.

What put me off a Japanese V8 was their age and the six speed box. As far as I am aware, the V8 never came with the eight speed but happy to be corrected.

Available as 5.0 NA or 3.0 SCV6

My understanding of overseas models is limited, but as far as I can make out:

5.0 was only offered with a 6 speed box, but up till 13MY (12MY for diesel models)

Then the 5.0 was dropped for the SCV6, and 8 speed box fitted

5.0 has 375bhp, 3.0 has 340bhp, but with a chunk more torque due to the charger

Happy to be corrected on the above Thumbs Up

Many thanks A1GSS Thumbs Up

You recommended that I took my D4 to Zagato aka Chris Calvert in Billingshurst, which I did.

The car was with Chris for a week, during which time he was very communicative, and kept me in touch with progress. I collected it yesterday and am very happy with the outcome.

The full treatment, using ACF-50 and Dinitrol 1000 cavity wax, 4941 Underbody Wax and 445 Stone Chip cost £650.

Chris commented that that the chassis was in good condition prior to treatment, so if there was more remedial work to do the cost would no doubt increase over the £650 which I paid.

Having had the rustproofing done by Chris Calvert, the question is what next, on the assumption that I’m going to run the D4 for, hopefully, many more years.

Things which I will definitely do are:-

1. Drain & refill the ADBlue tank every 2nd or 3rd year.
https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic205339.html?

2. Go back to Chris Calvert to have the underside rust proofing inspected and topped up, if required, from time to time, probably every 2 to 3 years

3. Continue to use Shell V Power diesel, as I have since I bought the car.

Things which I am contemplating include:-

A. Following Disco_Mikey’s recommendations regarding BG Products’ Diesel Oil Conditioner (“DOC”), Premium Diesel Fuel System Cleaner (“BG 245”) and Engine Performance and Compression Restorer (“BG EPR”).

B. Fitting a new oil pump. I feel the engine must benefit from the high pressure that a new pump would supply. But I’m somewhat concerned by a couple of reports of engine problems following a new pump being fitted.

C. If I fit a new oil pump, it would make sense to fit a new water pump concurrently.

The BIG question is what else should I do, to prolong the life of my D4 other of course than regular maintenance?
