EPB cable replacement

I have searched the forum and google, but couldn't find a definitive answer. I know there's endless posts about the dreaded EPB.

Can the EPB cables be replaced with the module still attached to the car? I guess it would be fiddly, but is it do-able? (I'm very capable, being an engineer)

I've had an occasional screeching for a while although the EPB does come on ok and releases on driving away. It's not jammed, but I have had the park brake fault message a couple of times.
I replaced the rear discs, pads and shoes last week (the shoe linkages were seized) after reading many posts on this, following the BBB and doing the recommended way of adjusting, but it's still the same and I couldn't complete the bedding in procedure.
I have a feeling the cables are jamming slightly (would this cause screeching?) as when doing the service mode to replace the shoes, the cable ends didn't seem to be out as far as I would have expected and the plastic securing nuts going onto the backplate look well seized. The backplate disc shields have disintegrated and I've got new ones to fit eventually when I get around to it.

yep did mine a few weeks ago hardest part was getting the cable out from under the car once it was disconnected from the module so whether you take it out or do in situe makes no difference to that

has your cable snapped? mine did the hardest part was getting the unit into service mode as it had done an emergency release and as a result i could not wind it off with the iid tool so had to get inventive with a g clamp to be able to reset then wind back the unit via the iid tool

not saying it was easy but its doable with patience or you pay someone else big money to do it for you
i also fitted the chinesey cable that cost about £18 fitted fine and look as good as oem
mine snapped only the o/s cable so i only changed that one and from what i read it seems to be the one that usually goes, nipple snapped off the end on the brake shoe Thumbs Up good luck

Thanks for the info, I have patience which you need with these vehicles, and I'm guessing you need triple jointed arms, but I'm used to that sort of thing, lol.

I was looking at the cheaper cables, but wasn't sure of the quality, as wouldn't want to be replacing them in another year.
I think my cables are just snagging sometimes as they looked quite corroded at the hub end. The brake will work fine a few times, then just screech for the next few times. Hopefully it will work during the MOT next week as can't do the job for a few weeks.

Good afternoon eightfoot.
I have the intention and I have been thinking about it for many days, to remove the EPB and replace the internal bearings of the engine. The reason for wanting to change them is that when I put the EPB on, sometimes the vehicle continues to move for approximately one meter until it brakes and I suspect that the engine continues to act because at that moment the bearing has missing teeth that broke and continues until it finds teeth in good condition and that is when it acts, from here it advances a little more until blocking/braking.
I wanted to ask you... is it possible to remove the EPB engine to replace its bearings, WITHOUT HAVING TO DISCONNECT THE CABLES FROM THE SHOES?
My idea is to access underneath, removing the spare wheel, and disassemble the EPB box and its bearings in situ by only disconnecting the cables from the EPB box without having to disconnect them from the wheels. Is this possible?

Mine has failed MoT on epb and the mechanic says he thinks it could be a snapped cable as well. Are there any guides/ instructions on doing this. I have 11 days to get sorted before my MoT runs out so hoping to get it done by then

Is yours an automatic? I put mine in Park when they did my MOT, I told them about the screech when stationary using the EPB and they said as long as the rolling test was OK it would pass. They used the device that goes in the car to do the test as they can't do it on the rolling road, and it was spot on as pulling the EPB while moving activates the ABS system I believe.
It might depend on how picky they are and/or how well they know the D3/D4.

Don’t want to really mention the obvious, but the EPB cable is kept in place near the rear hubs by a couple of clips. These clips can wear through eventually, and the cable can then foul on the inside of the rear wheels. They’re bolted to a rear suspension arm I think.
 I’m a Disco 4 believer. What a vehicle!

Hello. It is electronic (button on and off), and here, at the MOT they don't check it. They only check the handbrake if it is a manual lever without an electronic system.

Mine is auto but they never mentioned at about it being an auto and park sufficing. I have used these guys for the last 4 years and have no reason to doubt their knowledge. I'm going to get the discs off at the weekend and have a good check. Tbh I never use the EPB and didn't iny last one which was a manual

AFAIK, the rule with the EPB is use it or lose it. If it's never used, it will cause problems sooner or later. The same goes if it's not maintained. Mine got stuck after the brake shoe in one of them disintegrated.
