Discovery 3/Poor diesel Quality
Contemplating picking up a TDV6 2.7 for Ghana where there is a LR agent and reasonable support service but concerned about the poor quality of diesel that is had out there and in africa generally. i would welcome any comments about the sustainability of the LR3 in the long term under such circumstances and comments from LR3 users in africa generally regarding this thorny issue.

Your biggest problem will be algae and dirt in the diesel. All you will need to do is do an extra ardeous usage oilchange because of the high sulfur levels in your region.
If you have a look in my gallery ther is a slightly old (PDF) table of the sulfur content of various african countries diesel fuel.

Cheers PLC, already seen what you refer to and Ghana's sulphur content looks like 5000 parts per million, compared to the standard the EPA is seeking to achieve. Is this likely to damage the engine overtime? really wouldnt make sense picking up the car as much as l love it if this is the case. What has been your experience back in SA which looks to have a better diesel quality in Africa.

Sunny,
The elevated sulfur levels should not seriously affect the vehicle life, unless you use inferior engine oil (poor TBN) and/or do lots of short trips without switching to a shorter oil change schedule.
Landrover allows for standard servicing with sulfur content of 3000 ppm.

Thanks PSC, that puts my mind at rest. Confirms what the Land Rover dealer in the UK highlighted - the need for regular oil change, along with fuel/air filter. Think i'm going to go for it.
