I was discussing this with Chris and Iain on the ferry back from Africa, I thought I'd throw it open for a few more ideas...
Currently, my PMR thang has it's speaker output plugged into the right channel line input on the ipod ACM thang. It works very well - when the PMR is powered on, the right channel ignores the ipod input and goes over to the PMR input. I don't know how it works, but it does. A useful hidden feature of the ACM.
I want to improve on this, by having it only mute the ipod when there is noise coming from the PMR. Chris and I discussed getting some sort of signal off the squelch thing on the radio. He then went on to use words like op amp and solid state relay and my mind wandered... Anyway, the disadvantage to this is the PMR box is hidden away in the boot. It would be much easier if I could achieve the whole thing using only what comes to the front of the vehicle - the speaker output.
Basically, my question to the electronics experts is, can I buy/build a little circuit that will detect noise on the input and only connect it to the output if it is over a certain volume?
I've done it. As you can see, the presentation is awesome, and you can barely tell that I've done a mod to my vehicle at all
OK, it's a prototype, so now I know it works I can get a proper enclosure for it and make everything a bit neater. I can also take my centre console apart again to reattach the park brake switch
Thanks to wiggs for helping me use the Internet to find this, which is really the only clever thing involved in the whole job.

I like the solution & it looks as though you'll be able to get that down to a fraction of the size it is currently. Should fit in your glovebox quite nicely

You've probably mentioned this elsewhere, but why is your gear selector the wrong way round
@ CT: Smartarse
@ CW: Because I wasn't concentrating when I reattached it. I spotted it pretty quickly when I went to drive off. It still works this way round, you know.

good job ,
Did you not need the "Speaker to RCA Line Level Converter" ?G4 Gone ...but not forgotten
I did buy a couple, but they don't seem to be doing much for me. I'm going to take the whole box of bits with me to Billing and if there are any rainy days I might have a bit more of a play with it all.
Could you not divert auxilliary power through the deflector array? I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
But NOT if you varied the containment field polarity to compensate for the field matrix fluctations. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
