Additional diesel fuel filter

Hi all, hopefully someone can shed some light onto this subject. I was up in Namibia a few weeks ago and heard some very scary stories about the damage dirty diesel had caused to vehicles. This precipitated some discussions about adding after market fuel filters to vehicles. Last week I had my D3 serviced at Midrand and asked their point of view and they recommended adding an additional filter. Questions to the forum. Is it better to add the filter before the fuel tank or after? Can someone give advise on what type and size to have fitted? Question

I look forward to the enlightened responses! Bow down

"Before the fuel tank" Shocked not sure that is possible except by filtering as you add fuel to the tank????

Personally I would plumb directly after the tank before the fuel is taken through any other components other than pipe.

I would agree with you Simon, but as you know there is the first fuel pump in the tank. If it were possible to have the new filter before the tank then theoretically the fuel is cleaned before entering the tank and there should be no dirt depositing in the tank. The pump in the tank and the rest would not give problems due to dirty diesel.

Hmmm - but your fuel, with any contamination, starts in the tank, any filter will be after the primary in-tank pump so that can only be protected by filtering as you fill up - but you will only be able to remove gross contamination that way I think.

Any filter you put in the return line won't protect against contamination as the fuel will have gone from the tank and through all the fuel components before being filtered out. The return fuel will be clean but the contamination will have done its damage before being filtered out.

To be any use you'll have to plumb it immediately after the tank/pump exit.
 Cheers

SteveV,
Both filtering options are available, meaning, a funnel type
filter can be had from Racor, Heine has one.
As for the tank discharge end, you can start with a basic filter head,
which you can screw on a canister type filter, or go for the more
advanced combination system. This would give more options as
to type of filter elements you can use, and separation stage with
a clear bowl, to trap sediment & water. Therefore you can see any
contamination in the bowl and drain it. As for piping and fittings
they are freely available. Fitting a filtering unit of this type can
only work in the engine bay, too big for under vehicle mounting.
What we would have to find out is the fuel flow rate of the D3,
as the filter systems are rated @ ????Lt/min.
I've been out of the truck game for 10 years, and have no more
contacts in this field, some of the suppliers were Racor, Donaldson
and Fleet Guard.

Hi Discoeast

Thank you for the reply, I'll definitely contact the filter guys. Hennie can you supply some info on the Racor on the funnel filter you have. Are you happy with this option's performance?

Anyone else done this conversion on their Disco3?

Got the filter from http://www.turboformance.co.za/index.html

About R500 iirc . Nice thing about it is that it stops the crap getting in the tank , but it is quite bulky and a bit slow . I beleive they have a new one with a quicker flow rate . (They might also be able to help you with inline filters)

Guy's
I've mailed turboformance and James is going to do some research
on a system for us.
I'll give you the info I got from a down loaded LR pdf file.
Fuel pump in tank rated for 70 Lt/hr(1.16Lt/min) @ 0.5 bar pressure.
First stage in tank pump filter @ 31 micron with bypass fitted.
Second stage in tank pump filter @ 300 micron.
Pass this on to any other filter fundi you know, the more options
the better.

Glad you got a response from Turboformance, I heard squat from them. I will be contacting Parker locally to see if they can be of help.

SteveV,
Ok, after much Emailing, i've got IMHO what will work.
Will place my order today and have it in my grubby paws next week.
Our main problem was the total height of the assembly, I have only
205mm to mount it in. The shorter filters have a flow rate of 57 Lt/hr,
and we require 70 Lt/hr. The one I've ordered flows @ 80.
Watch this space for updates.

Cheers

PS. I was told that were others looking for systems for D3's

I am watching this thread with much interest as my D3 has been experiencing the "low pressure" failure a number of times and LR insist that it is dirty fuel related.

I have the Racor funnel filter and use it whenever I fill up from a suspect supplier. The question that I must ask is " What will the effect of an in-line filter be on LR standard warranty" Question
Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Dual battery system. Upgraded tow hitch. Mantec skid plate. Frontrunner rr. Tmax double headed built in compressor

When I spoke to LR Midrand about the addition of another fuel filter I specifically asked about the impact on the warranty. They said it was a good idea to add another filter as it would reduce warranty costs for LR. They said it wouold not impact on the warranty of the vehicle. I guess you coulds always ask for that in writing.

I have just been on the phone with Parker Hannifin regarding the inline filters and they said that the 445R2 would be the inline filter they would recommend, the flow rate is approx. 170L/hr. They said that the 120B flow rate would be cutting it a bit fine. Nigel (Parker sales person) will speak to some of his colleagues about their experiences and will send through info and pricing which I can pass on. He will include info on the inline filters as well as the hand-held funnel filter. Till later.

I've got the new filter and passed it around to the guys on saterday.
The plan was to mount it in the engine bay, thus the concern of total
height. Poped open the bonnet, looking for a route to lay the piping,
removed plastic gearbox belly plate aaaannnndddd bingo.
Found the perfect place to mount it. just rear of the fuel cooler.
There is enough space for the 170lt/hr filter to fit also,
I think this is where the earlier models had there's fitted.
Now this solves the problem of fuel draining back from the
engine bay mounted filter. There is a mounting plate, but
the supplied bracket will not work and would have to fabricate
one to suit. So that's my next mission.
