Roof tent and standard LR roof bars.

For my friends in Southern Africa ...

Has anyone fit an Eezi-Awn Series 3 1400mm roof tent on standard LR roof bars? If so how (can you just drill through the bars) and is it safe (bears the load well enough with 2 people in [ when stationary, of course ] ).

And how would you fit an awning on those bars?

I'm a bit limited for roof-racks here in Oman, but a big fan of roof-tents (my folks have lived in Botswana for 20-odd years - everybody has one!). I've found a Front Runner dealer/agent in Dubai but I don't know yet how well stocked they'll be (what I really want is the auxilliary fuel tank) - if I can make do with the standard bars, all the better.

Not an expert on roof bars or roof tents so I may just be wasting your time but I cant see a roof tent sitting comfortably on just roof bars. I know with the expo rack you have to remove the sides to give a greater flat area for a roof tent.

Also on the awning with only two bars/ fixing points, may not be enough for stability. I have the expo rack and had to get 3 brackets made up. Pretty neat in the end. Might be a better option for you.

Thumbs Up

Ichibod,
The first issue that comes to mind would be the curving of the
bars from front to back, as the expo roof rack has on the top bars.
I would think that the mounting bolts for the bars are the same as
for the roof rack, and the load would be on the correct points on the
roof. I would suggest the use of a sub frame to mount the awning
and roof top tent on first, then devise some type of clamping system
to fit to the bars. The drilling of bolt holes in the bars would weaken
them IMHO. Just bear in mind to try and keep the weight in the center
of the bars, as this will determine which way the tent will open up.
As for the long range tank, only available for the diesel at this point
in time, and FR do one for the D3.
Hope this helps you.

Cheers.

The FontRunner featherlite fits on the FrontRunner roof bars with no problem because of the separate mounting brackets that will take up any curvature angle, as well as the roof bars being completely flat. I would assume that almost any rooftop would fit, as long as there is a separate bracket.

BUT, it won't work with the LandRover bars.

Maybe you can buy the FrontRunner bars from your local dealer? They will fit onto the standard Land Rover rails, and will be ok with light loads and good roads.
