I love the TOA feature but a question. Is the TOA set on the basis of the current speed of does it take into account pre-set average speeds for roads ahead.? For example. If the first 50% of a journey is motorway and you are doing a steady 75-80mph but the remaining 50% is cross country where 60mph is max national speed, is that taken into account while on the motorway?

I have a feeling that it takes the max speed on the type off roads in account.
I found if I have a section off highway followed with a section off normal roads it reasonable get the time. Only in small villages were you have to wait on other traffic you loose time.
If you speed on a road you make up time.
In Germany it looks like it calculates with 130 km/hr on the autobahn.Roel

Maybe it's me then. There is one regular journey I do from Leyland to Clay Cross in Derbyshire. On a couple of occasions the TOA has shown me getting there so late for my appointment that I've rung up to apologise en route only to find a few miles later that I'm back on track time wise.

I agree. D3 satnav is perplexing. TOA is an awful guestimate until you've been on the route for a while.
My Merc's satnav (same make as the Chrysler) is much more accurate.
I still prefer the D3, though.

I find it really useful also. On my wifes Tom Tom it works on the average speed for road categories, which can be adjusted to your own preference. I assume the LR unit must work in a similar way, as I notice that it does recalculate the time as the journey progresses. It seems to be better on the M ways, then the A roads at predicting the TOA. Although I can't find a user setting to adjust the average speed so assume it must be preset
The Disco 2 Harmon Kardon sat nav had the TOA feature that for me was very accurate based on a load of journeys to catch ferries (that might have been missed otherwise_
I found that sat nav easy to use, accurate & non intrusive.
I have yet to fully explore all the features & options on this HSE sat navBREXIT - done properly.

I have to say my D3 TOA is always spot on, you do get variances if sat in traffic for a short period of time, bu t it usually upsates within a few miles of getting moving again.
I would say it is based on your current average speed, as if travelling a few mph over speed limit it does adjust arrival time accordingly.
My Tom Tom with the speed cameras on only gives TOA based on the max speed for the roads to be used. can be well out a the start of a journey and only really becomes accurate when using some right foot once you around 30- mins from your destination.
It seems to take into account your average speed on that journey - for example, trundling around the M25 for a while it shows a reasonable TOA, get stuck in snail like traffic for more than about 5 minutes and it starts adding minutes, then half an hour, then hours to your journey, then once traffic clears for no reason (as is usually the case on the M25) and you get up to speed it instantly drops back to about where you were to start with, but a few minutes later to reflect the time you have been near stationary.
Just read that a couple of times, does it make sense? Otherwise I will have another beer and try again......Craig

I find extremely accurate, I always arrive at the exact time it says on the sat nav
However, the arrival times displayed during the journey can vary enourmously. I think they base the time on the average speed over the previous 10 minutes. I don't think there is any consideration given to type of road. I have a Tom Tom also, and that seems to have a much more stable predicted time of arrival.

Mine seems to use the average speed over the previous leg (not sure how long) and applies it to the remainder of the journey. I recently did a little test using the AVG SPEED reading on the dash against miles remaining on the Sat Nav. A little sad I know but it was a boring drive!
This was also illustrated by a drive across London and then onto the M4/M5. The initial ETA was some 11 hours ahead, but dropped sharply once on the motorway and the nsettled out as the journey progressed.

I've spent a fair bit of time watching the TOA on the D3 and can all but guarantee that is is basing its assumptions on the average speed during the previous few minutes. Totally useless and almost responsible for me missing a ferry in Hull recently. It also appears to take no regard for the types of roads planned in the sat-nav.
By contrast, SWMBO's Audi Sat Nav seems to work in a much more accurate fashion and it doesn't make a lot of difference is you have a burst of speed or run through a town at 20mph. Last time it was used, we left Aberdeen and the Sat Nav said we would arrive near Bristol at 10.30pm. We arrived at 10.18pm - well impressed.The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom
