I had a D3 key stolen from my home. My vehicle insurer insisted that I demonstrate that the stolen key had been deactivated. The only way to do this was to get two new keys (at the cost you mentioned) have them programmed to work in the D3 and keep the old key to show the insurer (had to go to their office) that it no longer worked.
As an aside, changing the tumbler locks to prevent the key from even opening the D3 is complicated (and "very expensive" ). Doing this apparently confused the headquarter registry of what key works in what vehicle and so it is apparently very hard to ever order a replacement key once the tumblers have been changed. At least my insurer didn't require this. No the insurer didn't pay for the stolen key, I had to.
