Flat Battery...

Tried to start mine today.....no go 1 very slow crank of engine & stop
It did start first time with jump leads & a restart was possible after about 15 mins of engine at tick-over

I reckon it had been parke d for about ten days & before that did local running lots of 20 minute runs.

Was the solution of what runs the battery down when parked ever found?
or
what can be "left on" ?

...my D3 is a two year old HSE with about 21k miles on it.
Is it possible the battery could be "beggered" ?

Just seen the other thread http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic28282.html?highlight=
which gives me the clue about multi short journeys....maybe this as the cause but what journeys I do now ar no different to what I have done for many months....the only difference is the age of the battery & cold / colder weather...

bit of a worry as I fear I will get stranded

are batteries under warranty ??

Have you got a multimeter or amp clamp to check the electrics for a drain ?

Or possibly you have a weak battery discharging down over those 10 days , so a battery test is also needed.

Most manufacturers only warranty there batterys for the first year .

My D3 sits about most of the time too, and am worried about my battrey too, but so far so good. Mine aint used for weeks on end so maybe you have a faulty battrey.

You could wire in a small solar panel and
put it against tbe back window to keep a trickle charge going into the battery
...............that wont work, you have to have sunshine Whistle

Hi BLFarrar, this is not just a problem that besets D3s, it a common problem with many vehicles but D3s are just a tad more susceptible.

By the number of miles you are driving, you are just not giving the alternator enough time to FULLY recharge the battery.

20 minute drives will replace the bulk of the power used while starting but if your battery is not in a fully charged state in the first place before you start the motor, all you are doing is slowly discharging the battery each time you start and then not driving long enough to replace both the amount of power you used while starting and the power that was lost while parked.

A simple and cheap solution would be to invest in a battery charger.

You need to get the battery back up to a fully charged state and keep it there when ever your vehicle is going to be sitting around for long periods.

You don’t need a huge current capacity battery charger, a small 2 to 4 amp multi stage charger would be find and you don’t need to have it connected all the time ( although this would not hurt ) just connect it up when ever you know you won’t be using the D3 for a while.

This will get your battery back up to a fully charged state between uses and greatly help to extend your battery’s operating life and also make starting a lot easier, particularly during the colder months.

I had similar issue
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic26139.h...t=15#d3top
But battery still holding up, even after many very cold starts.
However, I do get what I believe is called 'low voltage starts' which menas I get all sorts of error messages on the screen when no errors are actually there.

Hi BLFarrar, that sort of driving will do your battery the world of good if it is still in a good condition.

Hi Dick, how often do you drive the D3 and how long is your average trip.

Cheers.

I had exactly this problem, this summer when I left mine parked for 10 days. (20 months old and 31k miles). I had inadvertently left a switch on which - although I hadn't realised it before - was activating one side of the lighting relays for the roof lights. Never had a problem before or since. Are you sure you haven't got something similar energised which is just enough to drain the battery over that period of time?
I was taught to be cautious.

.....maybe

Thanks for all the data & advice guys
.....had a good look around the D3 after I had jump started it...
The only thing I noticed different was the nearside rear window was left open about 3/4" for some reason
I think I tried to open it to see through at an oblique junction that last time I had used it
The alarm system had triggered (or if it had I hadn't heard it).....does this drain power if it senses something different?

Over the Marathon delivery run to outer reaches of Ireland D3 has performed flawlessly - through some severe gales & rain storm & a major rescue mission to my sister in laws Audi TT stranded in a very muddy lane way.....up to its uxters in gloopy mud. So taking the D3 proved to be a salvation.

The Disco will now be left a week before its restarted...time will tell
