Off road novices tyre review AT2s and MTRs

Guys,

As most of you know i have been chewing my way through a few MTRS lately Big Cry, however this is probably not down to the tyre, just my inability to read a trail correctly.

What i thought i would do is give a quick newcomers review into my findings of tyres i have used to date and my opinions.

Obviously im no expert but may be usefull for the guys on here who are looking at options in 18 and 19" tyre sizes..cant comment on 17"s as i havent got any yet Whistle

MTRS

Merits

Fabulous traction in very muddy conditions, vehicle doesnt "fishtail" in extremely wet and muddy conditions.
Looks fantastic...gives the D3 a real presence Thumbs Up
Exellent vehicle control when either climbing steep muddy slopes on on side slopes...minimal lateral movement.
Very hard wearing

Downsides

Significantly Increased road noise and decreased mpg.
Weak sidewalls due to low profile? (probably my bad driving Embarassed )
Reduced levels of grip on wet rocks and flint.
Only real mud tread tyre available on 19" rims therefore nothing to compare to in the same size.
Handling not as sure footed on the road.
Limited supply/Price.

AT2s

Merits

No increase in road noise compared to standard road tyres.
MPG maybe 1-2 miles down on standard.
Good "all round" traction in most situations...probably does not get top marks in mud plugging, traveling over rocks, side wall strength but would probably score 8/10 in most cases.
Price.

Downsides

Lack of control in very muddy situations.
Tyres do not self clean as well as MTRs in mud, therefore loose a bit of purchase in sticky stuff.
Slight degredation of handling vs road tyres but better than MTRs
Dont look as "butch" as mtrs.

Summary

In my brief time of using the D3 off road i have been impressed with both sets of tyres i have used, however the AT2s are a recent addition so ill leave them on for a while and use them in a few more situations to give a comparison.

If i were limited to 1 tyre fits all then as a all round package i would go down the AT2 route every time, however if you spend your time in mostly muddy areas then the MTR would be 1st choice.

My only concern with MTRS is durability, i know lots of guys have run them with no issues, but i have lost a bit of confidence in them for the time being, the last thing i want to be worrying about is if im going to get another puncture, rather than concentrating on the driving.

Thumbs Up We are being told the end of June but have had these little stories before, I would think July would be a safer bet, price will not be available till they arrive in the U.K.

We have some very intresting news on the KL71, watch this space. www.ajstyres.co.uk
