front brake discs need replacing at 12k |
|
whilst in for compressor damage, the kind dealer decided to do a free health check for me. Car has done 12300 miles and alledgedly needs new front discs. This cannot be right surely, the discs will become almost a service item if they only last this mileage. Has anyone else experienced this

one of the biggest cash earners for dealers (or any garage for that matter) is disc replacements, when they're not really required. My first set changed at 60k miles (OK, mines a manual, mainly motorway mileage, so not heavy use of brakes). Ask them to show you, before doing the job, why they think they need changing.

If you off-road a lot then grit can quickly score the discs down, as others say I would ask to see the problem first (if you can't see yourself that is) before parting with any cash. 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

Most manufacturers design the relative wear rates to be approx 2 sets of pads to each set of discs in normal usage, for your discs to require replacement after a) such a low mileage and b) in only one set of discs is clearly either by the dealer or a fault worthy of involving LR. I´d be very suspicious. Cheers

I only say this as I have experience of visiting MK often as my FIL lives there but you have an extremely high number of roundabouts which increase the brake wear noticably..
I would still ask the dealer to produce evidence that they need replacing due to wear and not a fault with the brake system TLO has left the building.......

Maybe but he should still have gone through a set of pads before a set of discs.... Cheers

Just changed my fronts out at 55,000 miles. Lots of sand/mud/water off road. They were at 2mm and triggered the wear sensor. '05 LR3 (Disco III) Trail, 5 Passenger V8 petrol, LHD, ARB Bull Bar, Warn XD9000 Winch

Depends what the problem is... If it's warping, then that can happen at any time, especially if you tend to brake heavily and then sit with your foot on the brake (the disks will cool at a different rate where the pads are gripping causing the warping).
