Rock sliders
I've seen a few comments on rock sliders and side rails recently. The former appear to be for sill protection, the latter appear to be bling. Is that fair?
Does anyone have any pictures of rock sliders and side rails, "after action"? Would I be right to have picked up the idea that rock sliders are the better product if you want to protect your sills?
So far, I've never driven the car so hard that I thought the sills might be at risk. I've seen some of the photos that our American colleagues have posted, so I can imagine how you'd bend a sill, but are we talking 90th percentile drivers here, rather than most of us enthusiasts?
Finally, how do the sliders fix onto the car (drilling, no doubt)? And how much remedial work is required to reinstate the sills to reasonable nick when you sell the car?
Opinion and photos much appreciated.

no you don't need to drill when putting the sliders on, they use the original fixing points that the plastic trims use, its just a case of taking the plastic ones off and then putting rays on. then when you come to sell the car its just a case of off with rays sliders and back on with the plastic LR version. If in doubt............flat out.

Its easy enough to bend an unprotected sill NJF.Mine had a few dings in them that I would't have noticed only I removed the plastic sills.I made my own set of sill guards , bit of work getting them right. The front vertical face of the sill ( the part you see when you open the doors) isn't the same height from one end to another, i.e thicker at one end.Plus the pretapped holes already there in the sill ( used for OEM sidestep & tube brackets , they have circular adhesive tape tabs covering them ) arent linear or in a straight line. But after a few templates and trial holes its possible to get them right.
I also added some tree guards made from solid circular alloy and had them welded to the sliders. So far they havent let me down and have saved me the probable cost of new doors and/or plastics. They diameter of the tube is a bit light ( I'm buying some 38 mm alloy bar this week) and I need to increase the amount of spigots that fix the bar to the slider.I brought the tree guard/rail out far enough to protrude beyond the widest vertical face of the door and profiled them like the OEM sidesteps with a swept point at the front.
I know that this increases the body width in narrow access points but I'd rather that than buying new doors.Theres a few pics in my gallery.I'll only update them once I'm happy with the changes I'll be making as per above.
Alloy isn't cheap , or at least it wasn't when I made them, cheaper now seeing the quotes I've got lately but well worth it in the end.I haven't any pics of after action and cant do at the mo , my D3 is in witha few problems.Suffice to say that apart from a few scars they hold up very well. The plastic sills that you already have wont show any damage themselves apart from any scratches but if you offroad a lot once you take them off there will be underneath.I know RLD makes damn good sets and have seen them on some of the lads D3's over here.Well worth the buy IMO.
The OEM tubes & steps are crap.

Cheers, ayrshire, that would be great.
Ray, if you red this post, is there a lead time for supply of sliders and front protection plate?
Thanks, all.

I have been reliably informed that they are easy...you can practise by helping me to fit mine...
Like you said - no sills have been broken yet. But I am glad I am getting a set as there have been a few scraping and crunching moments recently. And seeing as the OEM sills are plastic, I don't want to take the chance...The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...
