Saw new spec 2009 S model TDV6 at Sandton LR yesterday. Only front bumper colour coded - in this case white. Already 3 chips on it showing the black underneath - salesman reckoned must have happened during transportation 
Front pdc. spots, armrests, 6 (or 8 ?) speaker system, metal inlays on central console, Bi-Xenon headlights, etc.
All the new features pushes entry level D3 well over R500k  According to the salesman LRSA has stopped selling the cheapest manual 5 seater TDV6 in SA.
These things are most probably based on intensive market research - but I question this decision to lay on all (most) of the nice to have's on the base model which should be very close to the SE and HSE by now.
What can still be added to the HSE to widen the gap or are they heading towards one model only  Erstwhile - D3 S '07. Dual battery system. Upgraded tow hitch. Mantec skid plate. Frontrunner rr. Tmax double headed built in compressor

when I first saw the new S, I thought it was awesome, assuming in my naiivety, that the price would stay at the same level as it always was. at 500k+ then people are gonna start looking upward again to the HSE if the price difference is not too big. maybe thats what LR want, as you say, one model
