Paint Chipping Off?

For those who have painted the plastic arches and bumpers. Do you have a problem with the paint sticking to the plastics properly?

I had mine painted 3 months back, after some time, the front right paint started peeling off as shown in this pic

The dealer agreed to repaint the whole arch free of charge. Yesterday while washing the car i have noticed that the rear bumper's paint is now starting to come off as well!!! Evil or Very Mad

Any ideas on this? Is it the dealer's poor painting techniques or what?

Thanks.

Ali

That's pretty stuck!!!!

Looks like they didn't prep the plastic properly before painting, they can be a right pain to keep the paint on if not prep's well Thumbs Up

Can be so many things, I would insist on a full new set as it is very unlikely the body shop would be able to strip and then re-clean the parts without specialist kit.

Don't think it's LR ...it's a dealer paint job over black spats. LR officially only colour coded from 09MY on

I was thinking of doing the same, getting the plastics colour coordinated, but on speaking to the bodyshop manager and an old work mate from a previous franchise, he advised my to avoid getting them painted.

His oppinion was that some of the modern plastic cleaners, restorers have a solvent to them, which penetrates the plastics and doesn't allow the paint to get a decent key, leading to flaking.

Not saying thsi is correct, only what i was told.

That explains a lot, the dealer would not be able to clean the plastic especially if someone had given it a wipe over with one of these vinyl plastic trim wipes. The factory(supplier) probably flames the surface before painting.

The re rigging of the LR paint shop to spray the plastic bits cost £15m ...so you would hope they have got it right ...I still have my doubts about long term durability though Rolling Eyes

a bit Off Topic but it is quite interesting the first time you watch one of these robots pass a naked flame over the surface of a bumper before spraying it.
