I totally agree with you. I was offered some straps last month and they would not have pulled the skin off a rice pudding and they were being sold as 10T slings.
You have to find a happy medium depending on the vehicle you are dealing with. For instance my D3 sunk into a bog, it took a 90 TD5 and a 90 V8 both pulling at the same time to free me, can you imaging the strains involved. If I had not had the higher rated equipment we would not have been able to “un-stick†my D3.
We can debate the health & safety side of things till the cows come home. At the end of the day its all down to circumstances and personal opinions. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

First a declared interest, I have an interest in a company that sells the Black Rat stuff. P.M. me for details of products prices & D£ forum discounts!.
In general I believe in the old addage that you get what you pay for. If you cab get new stuff form a reputable supplier.
I always use tested shackles. Different sizes for different jobs. Bear in mind that testing is noramlly done on a sample basis so that does not mean every tested shackle is actualy testes or guarunteed not to fail.
Always make sure that the pin goes all the way through the shackle. Never use a shackle where the pin binds when screwed in or out, it is probably bent or not the right pin for that shackle.
Strops / slings etc are normally certified for lifting. A purple strap has a SWL of 1000kg. If certified for lifting there is a safety factor of 6, so it should not fail until 6000kg of load is applied. I prefer the endless loop type of sling to the strap with an eye at each end. With the strap wit eyes the wear always occurs in the same place, where as with the endless sling the wear is even araound the whole sling.
The ratchet straps mentioned earlier may also be tested. However the individual components may be tested to 5 tonnes but I think you will find that the rating for the assembled unit is half that @ 2.5 tonne. This is due to the fact that the whole thing works on the principal of the friction of the strap around the central spindle. I carry 2 and they are very usefull.
For those of you who have or use winches, the pulley block is very usefull. Make sure that the pulley in the block is at leat as big a diameter as the drum on the winch. If not the cable will be damaged & weakened if pull around a tight radius underload.
KERR ropes were mentioned earlier. A useful tool when used correctly, but dangerous when misused. I use a "Snatch'em Strap" from Balck Rat. This has several advantages.
It is neat & space efficient when rolled.
It is easier to clean.
It is easier to spot damage or wear.
But the most important thing is that there is an overload indicator within the weave of the strap that shows red.
It is a good idea to wear gloves & eye protection during recovery jobs.
Regards to all

As I said its up to the individual. If it is going to take 30T to recover a vehicle and you use a Tirfor winch or whatever you will still need to use properly marked equipment with a SWL, you chose the SWL to suit.
Flying metal yes this may happen this is why none essential persons get out of the way. And the recovery is executed in a safe manner to reduce as many of the risks as possible.
All I am trying to say is get the proper kit with a SWL (of your choice) not some cheap import crap. In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Andrew, soory for the delay.
We can get waffles for you, but I dare say that many of the "big boys" will beat us on prices as we are only a small company. I would recomend talking to Peter Lamb @ First Four Off Road. Their stuff is top notch and reasonable. We specialise in recovery gear.
