18" vs 19" rims/tyres for D4

I am considering ATR/MTR tyres for my D4. How much better would 18" rims/tyres do compared to 19" in soft sand? Is it worth getting the special 18" rims for that advantage compared to a set of second hand LR 19" rims?

I am sorry can't really give you an answer Very Happy I have 19" on the D3 G4 and am also considering a change to 17"or 18"rims (the 18" with a look to a D4 in my future)

What I can tell you is that to get a mud terrain in 19" is a hassle - the goodyear MTR 255/55/19 that I have been using for the last 4 years are GR8 (noisy on tarr) offroad. BUT if you can get them are over R5k a tyre Shocked Not sure what you can get in 18" in 17" BFG Muds are available. But in 18" there should be more aggresive off-road tyres available just not sure now what is in South Africa.

So not easy to decide on the D4 - Most people say 18" is a lot better than 19" I have had no problems with MTR on 19" but don't have 18" experience.

Keep us posted on your progres

Don't know the D4. I have D3 V8 and can only go down to 18" which I did, but if you can go down to 18" then I would - 17" even better for sand driving. You will also find more choice of tyres and far more econical prices plus smoother ride around town.

Can't go to 17" on a D4 due to the size of the brake cliper.

I have 18" on my V8 D3 and I use BFG AT's (previously General Grabber AT2's). You can't get an 18" BFG mud as far as I know.

Why would you want a mud tire for sand? Pieter with a diesel D4 you would need all the tire you can buy to avoid normal banter for toybota crowd in Namibia sand dunes, if you can buy a HSE you can afford special 18" rims and PIRRELI ATR! or Cooper ATR with higher profile 285/60/18!

Hi Pieter,
I recently changed from 19" rims to the 'special' Compomotive 18" rims (the only 18" rim which will go over the 3.0Lt brake calipers).
I went for the 285/60/18 Cooper LTZ's. The tyre side wall height has increased dramatically and the tyre now baloons out past the rim quite a bit. The problem with the 19" rims and the 255/55/19 tyres is that the tyre was almost flush with the rim and had very little side wall. I managed to chip a rim two months after I bought the D4, and that was on a Landrover experience day.
So my answer to your original query. Yes, the 18" tyre is far better in sand, especially if you go with the same tyres as mine, as once aired down, they balloon out nicely.

Cheers, Craig

Thanks for the great advice Thumbs Up

Not convinced about availability/support of Coopers in SA.

An 18" adventure is gonna be expensive. Around Rk8 x 5 or 6 for Pirelli ATRs + rims = Rk40 to Rk50 Shocked

Maybe I should take the 19" into sand first and see how it goes...

This seems o be a contentious point in Oz. I suspect that part of the answer may be in the "type" of sand.

Hi Brett,
They do rub on the front chassis rails when reversing on full lock. On odd occasions they have rubbed on full lock going forward. This rubbing is only slight though.

I took the D4 with 19" Pirelli ATRs to Kosi Bay this weekend. It performed fantastically in the sandy tracks from Black Rock to Kosi Bay - MUCH better than the Fortuner in front who deflated to 0.8 bar to get through spots The D4 handled with ease. Not convinced at all that the 18" is worthwhile for sand driving in a D4, since it is excellent on 19" Bow down

18 inch wheels for D4

I swapped the OEM 19 inch for 18 inch Compomotive and fitted Toyo HT Open Country 265/60 R18. The improvement in ride was amazing. The OEM Good Year Wranglers do a disservice to the D4 SE's ride not to mention performance off road. I have done 20000km with this set up including 14000km towing a 2.5 tonne caravan with no problem at all. Unlike others on this thread I have not had any scrapping by the tyres. The Compomotive are a very snug fit on the locating section of the hub and there is not much space between the calliper and the rim but enough is enough.

Namibia 2010 LR4 3.0 TDV6 SE Auto Ipanema SandLR4

Hi guys
New to this forum but this tyre-issue is the reason I joined. Fed-up with tyre salesmen asking whatever they want for a tyre because they know we are screwed! I drive the LR4 in Namibia with Goodyear MTR's...great offroad but not so good in the sand - the sidewall does not take running deflated well at all. Have a set of Pirelli's also but they only last 20000km and puncture relatively easy. Won't even mention the originals...!
I am seriously considering the 18 inch ones from Compomotive - put a nice set of BFG AT's on them as with the Disco 3 and you have the perfect allrounder in my books. Costs GBP 180 per rim and the silver ones look great. To avoid rubbing they even send you a 'how to' to modify the plastics to not rub.
Does anyone tow a trailor on gravel roads often? The rigid mud flaps are extremely ineffective and I have lost 2 back windows here in Namibia - stones coming back from the trailer...Any ideas out there? Any well made after market products that you can recommend? In the meantime I have fabricated my own mud flaps from rubber but this does not look good at all!
Cheers

Thanks for the above link Pieter. Just had a brief scan through.

I see the Pirelli ATR is well regarded in South Africa. Thumbs Up
