PIRELLI ATR (255/55R19 111H) - Wear Rates?

I know this is the tyre of choice at the moment for the assembled masses, but I wondered if anyone who had been running them for a while can comment on wear rates?

Pirelli Scorpions wear like nothing else I have ever come across and will NOT be going back on when the current set expire in a thousand miles or so around 22K. I have low profile Michelin Pilot Sport 2's on my Alfa that have done 6K more than the Scorpions and still have more tread!

Vredstein Wintrac's are the other option, but I will shout the extra £200+ for the ATR if the wear rate is the same and they are really worth it.

Anyone tell me how theirs are wearing (on a D3 only please, not Defender stories Wink)

FFRR > D3 in weight though most likely so that probably counts Wink

The Scorpions are almost 2.5 mm in places Shocked so need to go soon.

So bit of research shows that ATR should have very good wear rates:

Tyre   - Wear Rate - Traction - Temprature

Scorpion Zero     - 400 A A
Scorpion ATR      - 520 A B
Goodyear MTR      - 320 A B
Michelin Latitude - 440 A A
Goodyear HP AW    - 440 A A

As its 520, which is pretty hard, but confusingly the MTR also has a low rate, and people say that's a tyre that lasts a long time - maybe just more tread to start with?

Pirelli at/r road noise etc.

The pirelli agent at billing tells me at/r tyres are specially developed for use on South American roads with gravel surfaces. I would expect good wear then. How are they for road noise and ride comfort?

Just driven down to Spain and I have to say that there was no increase in noise and the comfort levels are the same. As long as the wear rate is good than these will be tyres for me in the future. Going off-roading next month so it'll be a chance to test them then.

Still sitting on the fence on the ATR, loving the wear rate examples I am seeing as seems the 520A really lives up spec. My local tyre guys says 20K from the Scorpions is not bad he reckons. ATR's are gonna cost me £200 more than scorpions though, will I really get another xK miles out of them to justify the price is the question?

Anyone seeing a drop in MPG with ATR? If there is, I will stick with scorpions for sure.

Noticed nearside front is all scrubbed on the outer blocks at the weekend, so its off to LR to have a chat again about the warranty work on the suspension they did that side earlier in the year...

Anyone got anything (constructive) to sway me one way or t'other?

Paul,

If it helps set your mind at rest about the cost of the ATR's I rang for a quote on these down here in rural Western Australia this morning and was told $465 each - which I think equates to somewhere around 230 quid or thereabouts, depending what our dollar is doing. Shocked So - I reckon consider yourself fortunate, and go for it!

Will keep an eye out for any local experience on Oz Disco forums.

Yeah the ATR are about £210 here... if I was in the outback it would be easy choice, but living in rural england, while the roads are bad, its not quite the same scale Wink

There's a Disco up in Perth (Western Australia, not Scotland!) with 19" ATRs fitted a couple of weeks back. Will see if I can suss out some info for you. I'd be keen to find out how he's traveling - might be heading down the same track with tyres shortly.
