What competition is there for a D4?
Time to replace my D3 before it implodes. The D4 looks too shiny to offroad (given the painted wheelarches) so I'm considering other models that don't quite have the offroad abilities of a D4 as well. I need a BIG loadspace. Anything much less than a D3/D4 is no good. So that means no to a Q7, a Merc ML or a RRSport.
The FFRR is so long in the tooth, they MUST be replacing it soon and I don't want to get landed with an obsolete model (I keep my cars 5 years-ish).
That leaves the Merc GL. Anyone know much about them. They seem as rare as rocking horse poo.
Am I missing any others? Not bothered about 7 seats.
Or is a blingy D4 the only option?
cheers

What car are you going to use for offroad jaunts then?I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

If no D3, just go for a Defender, Rob.
That way, you'll keep it in the family.
It's the only sensible thing that even I would do!

I agree with Ron, if you must get rid, and can't justify a D4, get a Defender for the time being.

Err ... have the wheel arches swapped for an unpainted set?
I was very impressed a Jeep's off-road performance last weekend. It climbed one hill with less effort than any LR I watched.
It was pig ugly, though.

Take the D4. The paint is no problem. I had one of them, fully painted in zermatt silver( incl. front and rearbumper, really every bit was paintet) It was a one off for the swiss importer. It was at the time(MY 2006) to expensive to sell that, so they scraped the idea.
I did a lot of offroading, say some of it was a bit risky (kamikazedisco was my nickname. On youtube you find some vids (search for userfehler or have look in the vid section)) the only damage I got, was when I t drove backward in a serie 1 because I didnt look good enough.

Don't go for the Merc GL it's a pimp mobile, how about the Mercedes G-Wagon. They still make them in Austria and apparently you can now get them in RHD again. Great spec, great 0ff-road, good range of engines and loads of space inside for all your gear.
I owned one a few years back and I still miss it today
However, mega bucks to buy, unless you live in Dubai where they are just very expensive.
When I win the Euro lottery on Friday i'm getting another one On a mission to find the perfect Pork Pie. Just Found it (I think)..(Yes I have)

Was recently talking to the (one and only) dealer here in Lux about painted arches, bumper etc versus the black plastic. He said that the painted ones will show scratches quicker but are cheaper to touch up / repaint than replace the non-painted ones.
You pays yer money...
(And yes, the Jeep did go up the hill quite sedately...but come on...its a Jeep... And there were a couple of other Jeeps trying the same hill and we thought they were going to kill themselves...)The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

I think you're missing the obvious choice here Rob. Get another D3I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Don't even think about the Q7, work friend had one for a short time it was tiny inside despite being longer than the D3. It went well, but had a cripplingy hard ride. He now owns a D3.
Only true rival would be a GL, but they're expensive if you want a similar spec. to an HSE.
I'd get a D4, take the original arches off & fit another set either black or painted. Then put the original ones back on when you sell it.
