Stop and Start

Am I right in thinking that the D4 does not have Stop and Start technology in it?

If so, why not? Confused And is it likely to get it in the future?

I think the stop/start can only work on a manual at the moment.

IIRC, LR are trying to get stop/start for the auto.
 The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

if you set off too quick the engine wouldn't switch on

The concept of stop start is great until you realise that some components are having to operate thousands of times more than if they were just used in normal operations ...ie. the starter motor perhaps Whistle

We have a BMW s/s in the family now and have only put £10 of diesel in (on top of the limited fuel provided upon purchase) - covered 600 miles so far Shocked My mate's Mini Cooper D has S/S and we got over 75mpg on a motorway jaunt darn sarf last week.

DG, I believe the components put under extra pressure have been improved?

The starter motor is beefed up, as is the battery, etc.

Appreciate that might be the case ......but if you think of a single journey across town of say 10 miles ...how many times would you stop .. 20, 30, 40, 50 times ? Thats just on one journey ....maybe I should have said 'hundreds of thousands of times' Whistle

Stop Start is a PITA on BMW's most turn it off (your think its a pain the agree on the Nav Rolling with laughter ) however there is a strict criteria for it to work any how

Nearly all Discovery 4s will be sold with automatic transmission - only the 'old' 2.7s will come with the manual option.

Stop/Start systems take advantage of the delay in the following whilst the system starts the engine:

1. depressing the clutch and/or disengaging the handbrake
2. selecting 1st gear
3. applying revs
4. easing out the clutch

During this time, the car will engage the starter motor and the engine will turn over and fire up....by the time you reach number 4, the engine is working and ready.

In an automatic, the normal thing is to take the foot off the brake and immediately press the accelerator and expect the car to move.

I believe that this is the reason why Stop/Start is not available on auto vehicles at the moment - it just wouldn't be smooth enough to be useable.....but it's only a matter of time until they get it working Thumbs Up

They are significantly improved to take into account the duty cycle they experience Smile

Parts don't have built-in life expectancies, but costs that must be acheived through the design/specification of them......

Saying that though - ISTR that the new S/S FL2s costs the same as the old ones did - so how do they recover the extra build-cost??
