Thanks Stevo. I have looked up the General Tire co and the tyres are available so will now see if I can get some at a reasonable price.
Cheers

Rob Let me know how you go and what the damage is. IF you do go ahead also how they are on/ off road. My patience is wearing thin on waiting for somehting for 19's so may have to bite the bullet and get 18's

I contacted the General Tire Co in USA and asked about availability and Aussie dealers - NO response. I have also contacted Graeme Cooper Autos in Sydney and got the following response:
The size 255-60-18 should be available in spring this year, I do believe other tyre manufactures are going to produce suitable tyres ....soon I hope.
All I can do is smile and wait...... and wait.......
Having said that it is amazing where I have been in Tassie with the road tyres as supplied. It just goes to show how good the electronic wizardry is - particularly in the mud. 2006 Discovery SE Zambezi Silver

Ok, still been chasing up on this tyre situation and General Tire in the 255/60/R18 will be available in the USA in September and in Australia around December of this year. I have been in contact with a supplier that has dealers all over the place, website is www.simex4x4.com. I have also sent an email to Coopers to see what the go is there, no response to date. Looks like I will be getting 18 inch rims which I have now found from GMAX in the right size etc for the D3 so unless something comes up between now and then looks like I will be having a merry xmas
Regards
Stevo
P.S. Someone might know but on my tyre plaque it says suitable rims are 19,18 and 17's?? I have heard that with the V8 HSE that 17's wouldnt go on due to the brake calipers. If so why would that be on the plaque, or would they do that generically? 2005 D3 HSE V8, General Tire AT2 255/55/R18, Kaymar Rear Bar and Wheel Carrier

has anyone looked at or tried these:
http://www.michelin.com.au/tyres/4x4_synchrone.asp
255/55R18
an earlier post said this size would fit?
Are there any issues re correct speedometer readings?
I had Bridgestone Duelers D693 on my Prado before and was very happy with them but can't get them in 18.
Basically I am looking for a not too agressive All Terrain Tire as I drive mainly on the road and am not keen on huge extra noise but want a bit more flexibility off road.
Should I "downgrade" to 17 rims? I am picking up my SE Diesel next week.
Or aren't these really no better than factory tires on D3?

I'd wait for Benny Hill's mate General Grabber in the 255/60 if you want to stay at 18". The 255/55R18 is too small if you ask me. It represents a reduction in diameter of over 3% (26mm) which is illegal in most states and the even smaller profile will make sand driving harder. Have a nice day!

Thanks for that - they look good but at a guess will be fairly loud onroad, though.
Which is realistically where I am driving most of the time. That's why I picked the Dueler last time as a reasonable compromise.

I don't know about the noise from the AT2, but you'd be surprised how good the sound deadening on the D3 really is.
I have Cooper STT's on my second set of rims and all you get is a low whine. Doesn't even warrant raised conversation. Nothing like the noise that you'd get if the same tyres were on a nissan or toyota. Have a nice day!

I've just put Cooper STT's on my 18" wheels they are a little bit bigger than standard 275/65/18
I will be trying them off-road on the weekend and will post how I find them.

Drivesafe has recommended the Cooper H/T Plus quite highly. So I'll probably go with those. if I had two sets of tyres might decide differently, but I'll see about that after taking them off road. From Cooper the new ATR looks best, but can't get the right size
My preference is one set of tyres which does what I need most: work well onroad and cope with the occasional off-road caper
Seems no one is recommneding downgrading the car to 17 inch rims the Plus seems the best option at the moment for me.

What is the largest tyre size that anyone has fitted? I'm keen on the Cooper STT that does come in a 32" for 18" rims...
Is the standard size a 30"?
cheers,
