It wasn't. It was an 8000 KGs rated strop. Thing is Wilma probably weighed in at close to 4 tonnes being stuck in silt etc, plus the weight of the D2, plus uphill pull and a speedy snatch so must have been getting close to that rating.

Can't really comment as I wasn't there but if Stu was that wedged (especially if they'd already tried to recover him from it by winching from the front and so presumably dragging him further in) it was probably the equivalent of 6 tons when you consider the weight and amount of resistance + the D2 combined with a shock loading on something that isn't designed for that amount of sudden energy transfer it's hardly surprising that it broke

I've got the video of WasnotWas's winch out on DVD. They used 3 trucks, 2 winches and multiple ropes. Although that 'hole' doesnt look much it was really sticky and gloopy. The other recoveries were done really well. I think they underestimated the weight and stiction.

Just seen the video! Well I'm not surprised it snapped. Obviously it's not nice to see any damage, but I have to say I think it was self inflicted. Silly

It's a shame it happened. Neil has probably hit the nail on the head and they underestimated the weight. These things happen and, this incident aside, the marshalls did do a great job, were good fun and helped make the day so enjoyable.

I knew exactly what was going to happen ....proof of that is if you watch me in the background (in front of the D2) ....I gave my camera to Johnnybum, jumped in the D3 and swiftly got the feck out of there Rolling with laughter
