I have owned my new D3 since April, and have covered c. 4.5k miles.
Since this morning when starting the dash display shows, for the first time, the number 13 and a clock icon.
Does this mean service is required in 13 days, weeks or months - or something else. The manual says nothing helpful!

13 days til service due. I suspect that they didn't reset the service indicator when you bought it (it was probably a few months old or is set for Arduous service) Bodsys Brake Bible

Interesting.
Bought new...
Do I take it to the stealers for a reset or ignore it?

I'd get them to re-set it when you're next passing. Take it to the people you boiught it from if poss , only coz it'd be easier & they should be shamed into doing it (should have been done at PDI) Bodsys Brake Bible

I had exactly the same issue a couple of weks ago - D3 registered March 1st 2009, service indicator came up with 30 (and then of course counted down for a few days) ...which leads me to believe the car was built in September 2008 (2009MY) and they didn't reset the counter before delivery?? Called in to the dealer (may be the same one as you?) and they reset it because it was annoying - only problem now is I will have to remember next March to get it serviced!!!!!
Cheers
