I read somewhere on the forum that, with the engine off, the car is checking the suspension from time to time and maintaining the level.
On mine, it seems that the rear suspension is going down after a while and raising to the proper level only when the engine runs. First issue?

I think this normal, mine also does this, if you touch the tailgate handle or the door handles it lets out whoosh sound, and this is normal, it's just the self leveling suspension checking and adjusting it's level.
Some body else on this site has explained this alot better than me!
So no problems keep smiling!!

Try my posting, technical page 2, Spasmodic exhausting of air suspension cylinder. Useful reponses, seems to be normal behaviour, no worries. Makes you jump though.

Thanks for the feedback. My problem seems to be that the car does not always selflevel the rear suspension that goes down until the engine runs...

Desazrens, the air suspension will exhaust pressure when you remove the ignition key but cannot "re-level" until you switch on the ingition again and the air compressor activates to pump it back up. You can avoid the release of air from the system by lowering the car to access mode before switching off the ignition - you can do this at any speed below about 5mph.

I think I misunderstood some comments on the forum and got the impression that the car will adjust its level even with the engine off.

It will adjust its level with the engine off, but it can only achieve 'level' by going down; until you start the car and the compressor can run again.
When the car is 'asleep' it wakes up every 2 hours to check the level. The best thing about this is that the cats in the street are scared to death of the car. I have no paw prints on my car, no matter how warm and inviting the bonnet becomes.

This is very clever, but I leave my car un-used for up to 4 months (it's a Sport so I assume it does the same suspension trick!) and have not yet come back to a flat battery so the system must use hardly any power!

I think it only releases air to level the D3 and will not charge the compressor unless the engine is running.
This is why the D3 appears lower after a lock up. Also why you can only lower the D3 within a few seconds of switch off.
If the D3 is considerably lower it may suggest a leak in the air suspension system.
