D4 Gearbox failure

A neighbour of mine has recently taken delivery of a D4 HSE. The auto box has developed a fault (200 miles) and needs replacing. He has no idea how long this will take but has been lent a 16000 mile RR Vogue (which he hates) so at leased they have looked after him, transport wise. My reasons for posting this are 1. To alert new or potential owners of this problem and 2. Is it a one off or are other D4 owners having gearbox problems?

Apart from this issue he told me he is very pleased with the D4 Smile

We had the auto box fail in our D3 after collecting it (brand new) from the dealer, about 10 miles Rolling Eyes

Apparently it was assembled incorrectly. Took 2 weeks for delivery and fitment of new box and has been perfect since.

This is the sort of thing which is why you NEVER buy a car within 6 months of it first being released (and I quote from a senior engineer of many years at Ford). Basically the first 6 month's cars are test vehicles (in fact even could be pre-production or production-line test vehicles updated for any fixes they need to apply.

he told me how when the first mondeo's came down the line the air-con sensor which has a little motor to draw in air for it to test rattled, so they grabbed laccy-bands off the secretary's desk. The first 3 month's cars all had this temporary fix on them until the redesigned fitting was tooled.

.

So it is. Had a D3 V8 from the first production. Had all the faults you see in the GTR listed. Some of them were listed after I first found them ont car.

Would like to know what the fault was, especially as my new D3 has a rather annoying noise at idle

I don't think that the D4 can be compared to an entirely new model; it isn't. Much is new, but even more much is the same. The pioneers were those who bought in 2004..........not 2009.

The subject of this thread relates to a gearbox that is essentially the same box as the D3. You will need to wait a couple of years before the D4 gets the new ZF box.

That said, much of the electronics are new, and there are clearly teething problems.

I thought that:
...'the upgraded ZF6HP28 Automatic Transmission is fitted as standard to 3.0 TDV6 and 5.0 SC derivatives (2.7 TDV6 and TDV8 carry-over existing gearboxes)'... [quoted from the D4 product brief]

Winger can you shed some light on this please...

Something may get lost in translation, but upgraded and new are rather different things. The D4 MY10 has an upgraded box.......something newer is in the offing further down the road. Wink
