D3 is dead as a dodo - ZERO POWER

B**ger!!
Having replaced the battery last week and the D3 starting well for the last few days, its now dead as a dodo.
Keys wont even unlock.

Nice chap from AA came round and connected up a power source and then immediately disconnected the battery as something withouth even the key in the ignition is pulling 120Amps!!!

Its being low loaded off to Guava. Funny smell was coming from low left hand side of engine (when looking at it from front with bonnet up) whilst power to hooked up.....could this be the pre heater?

Ho hum....could be expensive Sad

Should be - was the motor running and temp below 4/5 C ?
The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

A completely discharged battery, which you say you have, could easily draw 120A.

Thanks guys,
Last night the wife took the car out and it was probably around 5 degs.
Everything was running fine then, tried to start it at midday today and zero...had to use emergency key entry method just to open a door.

The chap from AA was more worried about the smell coming from engine bay than battery.
We could feel the heat coming from side of engine and jump leads from AA van got very warm to touch.

Battery is now disconnected completely and waiting for the low loader.

Could be a couple of things, then to add injury to insult I have just found a nice and wet passenger footwell....not my day me thinks.

Didnt even manage to start the D3 as AA powerpack and then van didnt have enough oomph to start.

Something somewhere is causing a drain I guess.

Mine did something like this a few months back and it was the alternator that had died. Stunk under the bonnet, and the jump start wouldn't do anything.

The alternator took the battery with it, so had to pay for the battery, but Tesco paid for the alternator. Thumbs Up

Andy yer sort of right if the engine was running but JC100 mentioned it was draining 120amps with the key out.

Could well be the Alternator back feeding causing this drain Thumbs Up

Well, you're right.
Initial findings are alternator has blown and taken gearbox ecu with it.
Hopefully thats the only damage but we wont know until the two components are changed tomorrow.
So fingers crossed.

Funnily enought I have had a number of traction reduced and transmission faults come and go over the last couple of months, so perhaps the gearbox ECU was faulty anyway and the spike was the final straw.
