Buying a Disco 3 with non LR dealer service history

Looking at a nice disco 3 in good condition but has had two services at a Ford dealer - Oil & ISP1 after it's first LR service. It's an approved car with full LR used warranty and it's 60k service and multi point check done by LR with invoices.

Should I avoid or is it ok now it's back in the dealer system.

Just wary of the 2 non LR service history visits.... Smile

As Ford owned Land Rover till Tata took does this give a better validity to the services? Just a thought.

Unnecessary quote removed

It just seemed odd. The LR sales guy said that as long as it had used LR parts, the warranty was fine. The replaced various bits at the 60k (it has done a good bit less too).

I really like the car but obviously the LR dealer is fully kitted out and would hope that they would have rectified most issues at the multi-point...

Not sure where you live but maybe get Tenforcash to give it a once over?

Maybe nothing but over a couple of big bumps there was a slight knock through the steering wheel. I presume this is normal?

Loved the test drive though, a lot of car, just want to make sure I get a good one! Smile

Get the ARB bushes & steering/Ball joints thoroughly checked over. Is it still under warranty?

No not normal. Could be lower wishbone ball joints, steering ball joints, steering column, or anti roll bar bushes. I would get that sorted before you buy it.

Noticed a slight wander at motorway speeds, but the track rods and ball joints have just been done - maybe need a once over...

Steve,
The wandering could be down to tyres and alignment; check tread depth & tyre pressure and ask for a four wheel alignment to be done, which should be cheaper for the garage than changing components hopefully.

I bought mine from an indy who (supposedly) had performed the last (45k) service prior to my purchase...When TFC came around to tell me what was wrong with it (after I bought it Embarassed ), the things that needed fixing came in total to about £1500 Big Cry (including a set of tyres which were sorely needed due to having the wrong weight rating Confused ).

That being said, some of the service issues that TFC found were missed by a Land Rover dealership on the 30k service. So having a full dealer history doesn't necessarily mean everything's been checked correctly either.

That's the thing, they obviously missed the handbrake squeal and ticked it as fine! As track rods and so on have been done in the past month & new tyres I'm guessing alignment would need done properly. I'll have a look at another higher mileage one today to compare.

One question - Auto box vs manual. I like the manual as previous 4x4's I've driven off road have all been manual, but is that a bad thing on the disco?

It's not a 'bad' thing, but the experience is so much more refined with the more than capable Auto Box.

some early manuals had clutch issues, there was a TSB for this which involves replacing the clutch & plate (ISTR.

Autobox is solid, some reports of juddering when under acceleration (particularly when towing or very loaded) seems to be cured by a change of Gearbox oil & filter Thumbs Up

The auto did feel quicker than the manual that was certainly the case. The handbrake was more of a chore but not something I couln't get used to.

I think I'll look at two other cars around the same price, one being an HSE over the SE spec I'm looking at with Auto Box.

I think I've decided now to go for a disco 3 pretty much, and hopefully use it offroad. If I can get it before Xmas I should be able to take it for a play in the fields of the in-laws farm Smile

You need to check [if possible] that when Ford serviced it they used genuine LR parts.
If not, that could void the LR warranty.
[sorry if this has already been raised in the above posts]
