Thanks Graeme, Appreciate getting your impression of the differences as the original d3 were great for most of thier life, apart from fade of the rears under stress, although they did recover quickly.

Local distributor of the bilsteins really wants to have a look at them as he thinks the failure is unnaceptable as well so I will let him have a look when I can spare the vehicle in a week or so.

Are Bilsteins still made in Germany or have they moved manufacturing to China? Whistle

A little bit off topic - but has anyone had shocky problems due to corragations - lots of corrrrrragations!! Doing a Tag-a-Long tour in July through the centre and was asked to replace all shocks, but thinking "if thay ain't broke ..." Plus the cost is high. Was suggested to bring the old ones along as spares but from what I can gather, replacing a shocky in the scrub is maybe not an option. Will not be towing this trip. D3 has done 80k mostly on-road, has air suspension.

Any thoughts welcomed.

All 3 Discovery 3's that went on a trip to Morocco last August needed new shock absorbers on their return. We encountered very high temperatures (50 degrees +) and lots of corrugations.

When driving behind a D3 in this situation, the rear wheels bounce quite alarmingly, showing little or no damping effect from the standard shocks.

The Defenders on the same trip (which were new) had no problems at all, despite the extra weight of the beam axles to control.

On my previous LR vehicles (RRC, D2s) my shocks have always needed replacing by 80K kms, especially the original LRs (more like 50K) but after markets including Konis too and mostly country road driving.

Having swapped from D4 to new D3 after 35K kms, I suspect that D4 rears (at least) would be be quite acceptable if there's usually some load in the back. I found the rear of the unladen D4 was rather harshly snatched down after a bump but its much more gentle now with the D3 shocks. I hope to fit a RWC before too long and possibly a LR tank later, so when the D3 ones are worn-out I might end-up going back to D4 rears permanently because of the extra weight behind the rear wheels. I could keep the LR tank full if needed to soften the everyday ride.

Unfortunately I had a bad experience with the Bilstein Shocks as well.

I have a RRS though, but suspension is very similar.

Bought 4 Bilstein Shocks (B6 OffRoad) as they were cheaper than OEM Delphi Ones.

Front was very stiff at first, 2000 KM later they were soft as butter. They both leaked all the oil and made knocking metal on metal noises over bumps. Really loud noises.

Waited 2 months for warranty ones to arrive, 3000 KM later same problem.

I asked for my money back, Bilstein refused and said they'll send a third pair.

Stay away from Bilstein, the front ones are terrible. Lots of problems with them.

I had thought of changing to the Koni but it sounds like they are problematic as well.
I hardly think one instance which was not even verified constitutes as being problematic. I have the Konis and no issues to date although no heavy offroading (but plenty of hauling and heavy carting) and only about 10-12 thou on them.

I have just spoken with Bilstein Germany about my third set of shock absorbers under warranty and they told me they know they had a technical problem but they have fixed it starting with April, and the new ones they're sending me will work properly now.

Will let you know if they're any good

they cannot refuse a refund it is against the law.

The Australian Government wrote:

Your rights to a refund
Under Australian law, you have a right to a refund if the
goods:
• are faulty;
• are unfit for their purpose (they don’t do what they
are supposed to do);
• do not match the description or sample you were
shown;
• have defects that were not obvious or were not
brought to your attention when you bought them; or
• were bought on the basis of misleading information
provided they were not purchased at an auction. if your next set fail get a refund, its your right.
