Fitting additional lights without spending a fortune...
Fitting additional lights without spending a fortune...
I think I can recall a post or gallery picture of additional lights fitted to the front bumper, or possibly the grill, without paying for the Land Rover brackets and loom. I have a nice set of lights in the garage ready to fit, jst not got the dosh to buy official parts from my local stealer
Anyone able to help? Tips on how to bodge the bracket and loom appreciated.

you can fix them to the grill panel, I had some on mine a couple of years ago and Al Cope did on his last one, probably has some pics in his gallery..

I seem to recall reading on here that the wiring harness for fog lights is already there even on most base models that do not have fog lights fitted, aparently the connector is located tucked away behind the N/S headlight (I think)

HID Spot lights
You can buy HID spot/driving lights without the need to convert them and locate the ballast somewhere. The ballasts are inside the lights already
do a google search for hid conversion driving lights

Sometimes additional lights aren't the solution, for example standard LR spots with xenons are a waste of time. Other times it's best to "upgrade" the lamps you have by replacing halogens with xenons or even fitting higher wattage bulbs. For the more extreme modifications HID conversion's are available.
I believe ENT has experience of this.

Cheers Andy
The HIDs in the fog lights are really good at improving your light pattern as it fills the gap between the bonnet and where the xenons hit the tarmac. It's early doors yet but I would recommend this to anyone who doesn't want to fork out on the likes of an A bar or seperate spots.Club Exped trailer

Thanks for the replies; I have already upgraded the bulbs in the lights, and probably am only looking at fitting additional lights because I think it will look better and because I have a spare set sat in the garage!
Anyway a couple of questions
Al; did you stengthen the grill? is that an extra strap or bracket at the top of the lights?
Matty 2332; If the wiring is there do I assume a switch at one end, and a light at the other and it works? Can you obtain a connector on its own from LR when you order the dash switch I wonder?

Fitting HID in your fog lights are a good upgrade for looks but is not really what you want when driving in the dark. Strong HID light in fog lights takes your fokus away from your eyes. I suppose you look further ahead that 3 meters in front of your car when you go along on b-roads and highway. Its much better putting some 50 watts H7 HID in the highbeam light

yep, I added some extra plastic to the bottom rail before drilling it for the mounting bolts (not much, a small piece about 6" long for each lamp). I also did add a thin plastic strap at the top, to to take out some lamp shake (they dont carry any of the lamp weight, and to be honest, they weren't bad without it), as I used the LR safari 5000's, and they are quite big lamps.
I also use the "old fashoned" method of connection, by using a relay triggered from the main beam to turn them on. I also used a two pin connector from Maplin just behind the grill, so that I could easily remove the grill complete with lamps as you need to be able to do this if you ever need to change a headlamp bulb.

thanks al
i was a little concerned that a new deluge of bings, bongs and error messages would start if i just used a relay
reassuring to hear yours worked ok
will save some money and mount through the grill ( when its warmer)
