I think I probably know the answer but I'll ask anyway in the vague hope that I'm wrong.
When the car is in Neutral and I depress the clutch pedal, in the first inch or so of movement there is a rumbling/grating sort of noise that disappears after the first inch or so. If you are in a gear and depress the clutch pedal (whilst moving obviously) there is no noise at all.
The clutch doesn't, and never has slipped or been burnt out at all and the only off roading it does is down the occasional stoney lane.
I'm just on 65,000 miles now.
Is this my clutch on its last legs or is there anything else that could be worth looking at first?????

Clutch release bearing? - but is as hard to check as replacing the clutch.
What is the sound like when at the biting point in gear?

It only seems to be there when in neutral, when in gear seems fine

I can't see any reasoning in that. Just wait till it go's - then you'll be sure
