Pete Bell, I am so very very sorry !!! |
|
As many of you will know, we as BBS HQ have been working with Pete to provide the capability to for anyone with our MSV-2 equipment to be able to program their engine management with one of his performance maps.
Things go well with that and although these things always take longer than one might hope for, most members now realize that we do always deliver the goods and they are always worth waiting for, and sure enough, all the software bits required are now done and in place and with our next software upgrade release this will become a reality.
However as part of the process, Pete had to supply me, on trust alone, one of his performance maps for my own Disco 3, which i duly applied, and like most, i was quite impressed with the improvement and have been enjoying having it, but it was not exactly staggering or worthy of a "holy cow" type post if you know what i mean.
However recently, i have been noticing much more smoke out the back of my D3 than usual and a lumpy tick over, and last weekend, when booting it to overtake a truck, i noticed me leaving behind quite a smoke screen. Like most i am thinking, Turbo, EGR's and / or that Petes remap has had quite a detrimental effect on my 90K engine that might ultimately cost me dearly. I tried topping up the oil, and only but ended up over filling it, with no improvement, But in the end i used the search function on Disco 3 to Discover the split pipe problem that so exactly matched my own symptoms. i even noted that the engine cover had the same traces of oil on the front left corner.
As soon as opportunity arose, i lifted the bonnet and looked quite closely at the area, no sign of a split, but i knew there must be one and sure enough as i reached my fingers around the back of the pipe, i could instantly feel the commonly described 2 inch split there at the back. and thought to myself, doesn't this forum just rock.
While i was there, out of guilt, i also unscrewed the Air filter box for the first time in the year or perhaps two i have had the car and pulled out an air filter quite closely resembling a door mat.
The next morning i called the local dealer, who quite tellingly had the pipe in stock and dropped by to pick it up, along with an oil and air filter, I then called by a mates garage, who helped me perform my mini service and pipe replacement on his ramp. In fairness while i was there i pulled an errant L322 out of transport mode for him, well thats what mates do for each other innit
Upon starting the engine, i was immediately impressed by it's smoothness and by how much more refined and quiet it sounded. But i was gonna be late for a vet appointment and so had to set off on the open road ASAP.
I expected the car to perform better, but holy moley, feck me, and sure enough there indeed was nothing less than the HOLY COW. And not so much as a whiff of smoke. I made it there with time to spare with trembling dogs, a wife who really needed some valium, and a smile on my face that made it look like i had been guzzling happy pills like there was no tomorrow.
Pete mate, i really dunno how you do what you do, and i am so ashamed to admit that i seem to have been judging it whilst unknowingly tying one arm behind its back.
I just wanted to make this post to apologize and let you know that i am now finally fully enlightened and totally in awe of what it really means to be the owner and full on enjoyer of a BAS remap.
I really can't now wait to introduce the capability for our MSV-2 system owners to be able to share in the experience.

HI BBS
Thank you for posting i cant belive ive only just see the thread you dont have to apologize m8 its really no problem. i hope you feel guilty tho hehe
As you have now found out for your self as have some other members on the forum, there can always be a underlined problems on a car that can hinder a remaps performance and make it not as good as it should be or giving problems, or on the other hand the remap can enhance a underline fault on a car that would normally go unseen.
It can be a long time before a problem or fault is found and allsorts or things could cross your mind as to why a particular problem is there including the thoughts of "even since a remap" blah blah or it must just be because of......
That said if you do ever need/want some adjustments made on the mapping (now your car is fixed) please please dont hesitate to give me a shout, id rarther it be perfect for you than just good eniough !
Im glad you have found the fault on your car and its nice it was one of the simpler ones to repair and not very costly, soon i will have some new 5ply hi quality silicone hoses availbale ill pop you one in the post then you will never need worry about that hose popping again.
Im now also ready and as excited as you are for the introduction of the new public MSV2 software, it just does go to show what combine forces are capable of when we get our heads together and it can only get better.

Yes, its a nice feeling to be working in joined forces on some projects, and we both feel far more can be achieved with our collective knowlage , i suppose as the saying goes "2 heads are better than one"

Just to add to this - although a smidgen off topic.
At the Southern area meet last night, we were discussing remaps etc. and it seems that I am one of a few that doesn't have one! Anyway Neil has just had Pete's remap done and chucked me his keys. So I took his D3 for a quick spin, and when I say quick, I mean QUICK. Blimey, it was such a different drive to mine. I know his is newer etc. but it felt a lot different. So I'll be joining the ramap club! D3 HSE MY05 Auto

Hi, as above there are a couple of logistical web site things to finalise which should be done asap.
To clarify a few things that users are probabaly not already aware of yet, the MSV2 remaps when available very shortly will be only available by the BBS web site, i will not be selling direct it must be paid for via the BBS site.
Basicly you will go to or at least a verient of https://blackbox-solutions.com/shop/ and on the page will be a way to pay for a MSV2 map file of which the price BBS control and set.
Colin or myself will confirm exactley as the site goes live and will make a PDF so show you exactley what is needed to order online mapping and to show you what information i will need to create the tuned file.
I hope that helps for now.

Pete,
After a map is purchased via BBS, will it then be possible to bring it over for you to fine tune or is it just a remote service?
Or is it better to come direct to you then pull the map off on to the MSV2 (if that is possible)?

Hi
Just as with the current BAS tool the MSV2 new software is designed to include a feature for remote tuning services for its owners and it is why BBS and my self have done so much developement to make it happen. in most cases there is no need to fine tune as long as i have correct information about the car to start with, adjustments where and only if needed will be available.
I will be giving tech support via email for the use of the system and to assist with the online pruchase where needed.
A visit to me first and then pulling the map of with the MSV2 would be defeting the whole feature of it being a remote self use visit less system.
This does not mean you are not welcome at my workshop, it just would be going against the whole idea of the system and its self setup feature which has taken so long to perfect while making it as easy as possibile for the user.
Pete

Hiya all
Pete, shame on you for not noting such a grovelling " i was wrong" and " i am sorry for doubting you" apology post sooner. Do you know how hard it was for me to say i was wrong
We get a bit of the same, especially with those having older cars, where the wiring and diagnostic connector is a bit riffy. the finger of suspicion is always laid at the feet of the new and most mis understood element (the infamous Black Box). And i guess my post's title and point was reflection of the in insider joke of the fact that so few, when finding the real culprit, ever bother to say "sorry, you were right all along"
@ Stu & Macleod
I can only now but acknowledge your comments and their validity entirely. It is truly and categorically remarkable as McLeod states, and Stu, I have already thrown my keys at some of my best friends and solicited some very jealous comments.
Suddenly, instead of just being part of the traffic, i am constantly on the look out for Jap crap owning wanna be's to give them a taste of what a secret weapon i am now driving.
I know some of you MSV-2 owners may be chomping at the bit some to benefit from mine and Petes Alliance and collaboration, but trust me we are working very hard on it and now have only a few loose non technical aspects to sort out.
