Well. I had two D3. One TDV6 and one V8. I loved them (the V8 was just a little bit to much at the gas station).
I now have a Volvo for the road and a Defender 110 for off-road.
But I really miss my D3 so I have decided to change it for a Disco at the end of this year.
Of course, my natural inclination is toward a D4 as it is said it is an "upgraded" D3.
Well, it surely looks cool and the interior is very next to the Range's. It has the multiple cameras option (very cool), a faster engine, a better terrain response, an adaptative cruise control (not sure about this one).
But ...
What I need is:
- a huge space inside : both have that
- a good car for long distance : same
- to be able to go off road with no second thoughts (well, the D3 is better here)
- to be able to add some nice equipment for off road (snorkel, front protection, extra height, etc) : D3 wins?
- an excellent hi-fi installation and rear DVD for the kids : both have that
Well ... I can get a very good price on a D3 and spend part of my gain on upgrading it
Any thoughts? My fifth Disco ...

Hi Cedwat,
If you're asking this question you are saying you want the D4 but can't justify it using reason.
So if reason doesn't do it, gut feeling should and then it all comes down to your financial limitations.

Well. If you look at my car list, you'll see reason nearly never was used in my choices for cars ! 8)
Cars are for having fun.
No, I really struggle in finding what is really better in the D4. Plus, I would certainly be more confortable off-road with a D3. Scratches would not worry me as much! My fifth Disco ...

I don't do a great deal of off-roading, for everything I have seen they are both on a par. Maybe the gradient brake release on the D4 would help in some circumstances.
When you drive the two on the road, the D4 handles better, excellerates in a different league, quality is top notch, seat comfort is much better. I have always described the D4 as the D3 with all of the little niggles I had ironed out. I didn't realise the improvement until I drove a D3 HSE about 3 months of driving my D4 and they are a very different drive.

So the improvement seems to be more on the on road side. I remember I did not like the headrests on the d3 and I found the seats a tad too hard. Passengers would also complain about the rear seats to be too "stiff" (angle).
It is still hard in France to have a d4 for trial!
I'd be interested about feedback about off road too, if anyone ...? My fifth Disco ...

The offroad experience in the D4 is 5% better than the D3. But the onroad experience is 50% better. The power now available from the 3.0 TDv6 is wholly more satisfying and effective. It has the ability to "move you" like the 2.7 never could.
We now have 6,000 miles on ours and she seems to be getting faster and with a deeper voice. Quite a different character than the D3. And its not the more luxurious, softer character you might have expected from sitting in a D4 in a showroom. Its actually a harder edged, more determined, powerful character than the D3 which definitely commands more respect. Disco 4 TDV6HSE

Yes. My tdv6 lacked a little bit of power and torque so I had it remaped. My V8 was okay on that regard.
The D4 seems harder on suspensions, I have read. So maybe it has lost a little confort? My fifth Disco ...

in my opinion d4 is as comfortable as d3,great performer,and the bigger brakes superb,would recomend,no issues upto date , regards mark.

I cant agree more the new 3.0L even in standard form is far better than my old 2.7 rrs ever was even whe tuned.
