18" Road Tyres for Australian conditions |
|
Guys,
The D3's Pirelli Scorpions are worn out, need to change. Ever since my wife rolled our D2 on BFG AT in the rain on motorway I have had a policy of keeping 2 sets of tyres - 18" with road tyres and 17" with offroad (Cooper STT).
I did not like the Scorpions, I don't think the OEM Wranglers are much better, so looking for other options. I love the Continental SportsContact2 on my road car, so looking at ContiCrossContact UHP, but wondering about other options like Michelin, or others ? Cooper HT+ don't seem to be in the right size.
Thoughts ?
Priority is grip and handling in the hot and cold, dry and wet.

Cooper HT+ are only slightly oversize. Had them on mine, very happy with them but they are a road tyre, have GG on now. I'll check size. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

caverD3 wrote:Cooper HT+ are only slightly oversize. I second what CaverD3 said. I had the HT+ on my old D3 V8 as a slightly more robust road tyre and they were excellent for my needs (towing 1200 kg, moderate speeds, fair amount of gravel roads). The slightly oversize bit is as much due to thicker tread as to being 10mm wider (and hence 6 mm bigger radius). Practically speaking this meant that the speedometer was closer to being accurate than it was with the OEM tyres. Also the HT+ have a higher load rating (114 by memory) which should help resist tread chunking and other load limit type damage. The price is also keen on them. I didn't notice any difference with noise on the HT+ compared to the OEM (but do notice a noise difference with the MTRs on ) Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.

G'day Scott,
Re the BFG, I couldn't see the sense in having heaps of rubber on the tyre if you are turtle up in the ditch, as for the HT+ I still have a set as my road tyres. The HT+ only had one puncture on a seven month trip around OZ with lot of gravel roads in N-QLD the NT and WA, though I was towing a three ton van and had two kitchen sinks as backup spares in the back of the Disco and managed to delaminate a few with the heat and coregations which is why I went to 17" and Bridg LT D694 for our van trips. PS, now that I have a few trips under the belt I only have one sink in the back of the disco.
The HT's are legal size in QLD being just under 15mm oversize.
HTH,
Ryall

I agree about the puncture resistance of the Cooper HT+s .
Always got a puncture every trip Oberon way. With the Coopers not one.
Legal in NSW also. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Scott,
My 2008 D3 came with the Cross Contact UHP and for on road grip they have been very good in all conditions to date - 32,000 km under the belt including the Great Ocean Road, a number of trips to the NSW high country and general commuting etc.
I would consider my driving style to be "lively", and whilst I am conscious of the fact the D3 is a 2.5 t 4wd I do not let that stop me enjoying the drive as the roads get twisty. I can not recall ever feeling like I was getting to the edge of ahesion as a result of the tyres.
I have also done a bit of off road work, and whilst I have been careful they have held pretty well, although they were cut up a bit after a couple of day trips up in the NSW/VIC High country.
As you sound like you have one set for hard work and one for road work, IMHO the Conti UHP are a very good "road" tyre.

George Regards,

Gents
I have just replaced my General Grabbers that gave us 65000klm of enthusiastic driving by a lead footed wife(loves the V8)
These tires have taken some rough tracks, Grampians, whalhala and Mt Dissapointment tracks and they were very good.
I have just put on Conti Cross Contact ATs and they feel the goods, if they last as long as the GGs i will be happy.
Contis were 1553 fitted and balanced, put the best GG under her for those moments.

Thanks guys for all your input. My Disco is in for service and I have a loaner Freelander with the Conti Cross Contact UHP and they are awesome on road. It confirms my thinking. The pricing on them has also come down since I priced them 2-3 years ago.
George, I appreciate you sharing your experience. Nice to hear from someone who has them that they are good on road and have coped offroad including some in the high country. On my old D2 with Michelin XPC's used to do well offroad, but lost a couple on the sharp stones in the Vic High Country.
If I did not have my 17" rims I think I would have gone an AT style, or even the HT plus. But since I have STT for offroad, I will keep I very road oriented tyres on the 18" rims. We will do graded dirt roads on the 18" but put the 17" on for more serious stuff. New MY15 TDv6 D4 in Buckingham Blue

Reporting back – I ended up with the Conti CrossContact UHP and I must say is a fantastic tyre, I have had them for 6 months now.
The Conti UHP is a ROAD TYRE, and I have found it very sticky in both wet and dry. Having said that, I have driven them carefully on dirt tracks has not caused any damage thus far.
Very happy customer. New MY15 TDv6 D4 in Buckingham Blue
