Cooper Creek/ Birdsville Track |
|
The Birdsville Track is now closed at the Cooper Crossing due to floodwaters from the Cooper flowing towards Lake Eyre. However, from tomorrow, June 8, the South Australian Highways Dept. will be operating their ferry a few kilometers upstream from the normal crossing.
This is a pretty rare event - the last occurence was about 20 years ago! So if you have the chance to visit the area, do so - road conditions on the main tracks at least, are not too bad, and fuel and food supplies are apparently OK at Birdsville, Mungerannie and Maree. Have a look at the SA Highways Dept. web site for road conditions, and at this one for some info on the ferry - please note the conditions, e.g. no caravans on the ferry!
Go to it - it's almost a once in lifetime experience!
