expedition modifications & general info
Hello,
I am new to this forum, but i am reading and searching it already for a few months. I already found a lot of information.
I have a few questions about a D3. I now have a defender 110 for my vacations and expeditions. I would like some comfort for these long trips... and i am considering to change my defender for a D3. But I still need some information.
1. Is the original radio/cd player/navigation sahara sand proof of do I need to take is out?
2. Is there a nice place to put a second batery?
3. Is a suspenion lift kit whit big tyres een good investment for offroad or is the standard air suspension whit good all terrain tyres (max tyre size 265/70/17) good enough?
4. Do the "se"and "hse"model have the terrain respons system whit the 3 diff lock's?
thanks in advance for the information.

Welcome Han
Plenty of members on here ahve been tunisia/morocco and no radios have stopped working because of sand
Second battery will fit in the Aux Battery slot which already exists as std in all D3's (you need a LR battery clamp & bolts for about £10). The Optima YellowTop D34 fits perfectly.
Anything above a base model will have Air and terrain response.
No lift kit generally needed although it can be done by replacement suspension height adjuster rods or by a Faultmate or similar changing the height settings (note extreme use of this may cause excessive wear on your CV joints.)
1. Don't know
2. Yes, there is a second battery compartment under the bonnet. Many of us have fitted Optima Yellow Top D34 batteries here, either with our own split charge systems or the ready-made "Traxide" system
3. If you put on bigger tyres and increase articulation you risk breaking CV joints - a weak point on the D3 in extreme conditions
4. The e-Diff is an optional extra on UK spec cars. You'll need to make enquiries with your local dealers on what spec/build your home market cars are.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Take a paint brush and brush out the sand... (honest... )

Yes, the D4 has an auxillary battery box like the D3, but unlike the D3 it is already full of bits - specifically the Brake Master Cylinder / ABS unit and a few other bits electricery
TFC and I are currently investigating potential solutions to this issue for the D4 as I need to get it sorted for several camping trips planned for this year and definitely before October's Tunisia outting - can't have my Beer getting warm

Hi,
Very nice picture's !! So disco's do have sahara experience....
Are there any posibility's to use a hi jack on a D3 or is the only possibility to place a arb front and back bumper....?
Anybody tried the Hi-lift adapter which you can stick in your rims??
Air Jacks seem to be the way forward for the Disco I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Deffo airjacks, have used a Takla twice changing punctures in the desert. However i don't use an airjack inflated from the exhaust, use a compressor instead. Much more sensible!
It might not LOOK like the desert, but Lawrence of Arabia is buried 200 yards from where I took that picture, so close enough I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
