Factory Warrantee runs out in 8 days - What to check please? |
|
Hi , have just realised that the 3 years is up in about a weeks time . Have trawled through the forum to see if there was specific advise on things to check up on, & have found lots of references to places like trivetts over East , but I am down in Albany in WA . The car isn't really due for another service yet , but is it a good idea to book it in with the dealer for them to check it ? Or I noticed that someone got the RAC to do an inspection but the RAC in WA has now stopped doing vehicle inspections , so any suggestions ?
The vehicle seems to be going well apart from a slight high pitched noise in the engine bay ( a bit like a cricket ) , which appears especially when the engine is under load . ( I do tow a fair bit) . I mentioned this to the dealer at the last service but they couldn't find a reason - just saying that other cars have had this noise also.
Have also noticed a lot of you going for extended warrantees - & then reading the horror stories of all the bits that have needed replacing .
I had the rear Diff Replaced after 26,000 which I thought was unusual - especially as they were very quiet about it - didn't even write it into the service book (though I did)
But I see now that lots of people seem to have had the front diffs replaced - have they fixed their problems with this?
Anyway any suggestions on how to proceed before it runs out will be appreciated.

I had the usual stuff replaced during the first 3 years under warranty:
Front diff/2 suspension compressors/1 windscreen/radiator overflow bottle/new electronic park brake/middle row seat brackets/short in the fog light wiring/ac flapper motor etc....
Then I bought the extended warranty and a few weeks into it I had the auto box rebuilt, another suspension compressor and the rear diff. (The bearings were shagged)
The bill for this last bit was around $13K... my part of it was around $600 for a service. The rest was picked up by the warranty company.
So.. from my perspective.. money well spent.
Cheers

Hi George,
I notice yours is a 2006 model... is it one of the first MY07 models with Euro4 motors? (If so, it will have a "7" in the 10th character in the VIN). They started being made after August 2006 IIRC. There was a recall for the high pressure fuel pump on these - and one of the failure modes sounds similar to that. If that was the case - it will suddenly go into "limp home" mode - then it will be an expensive repair bill!
Then again, it could also be the slight tappet sound under light load - which is a feature of the MY07-on diesels. I find mine is quieter after a fast, long run under load - like from Sydney to Canberra return last weekend. 8)
For me, the roughly $1500 is pretty cheap insurance and peace of mind for 3 years.
Good luck!
Cheers,
Rob

I received a reminder a few days ago from Lance Dixon (local dealer) that my original LR warranty was about to expire and to invite me to book my vehicle in for an "End of warranty vehicle inspection" this inspection is free and will take approx 1 hour, I've booked in for next week and now I have to decide whether to go for an extended warranty or take the risk, I'm leaning toward the extended warranty for the peace of mind.....decisions, decisions.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I will go & confront the Dealer & see if they also offer the free warrantee checkup - I will go armed with "the list" of things that should be checked & also question them regarding that noise & its possible causes including the fuel pump& recall.
i haven't had any reminder from my dealer about the end , maybe all dealers are not equal in this regard ??
And then I will see what they will hit me for an extended warrantee to se if its worth it.
Thanks again for the feedback.

There is a poll/thread on AULRO (Australian LR Owners) forum on "To buy Extended Warranty or not" http://www.aulro.com/afvb/d3-d4-rrs/96485-...-not.html? that you might find useful.
I believe the latest going price for the Allianz Extended Warranty (additional 60,000km or 3 years, whichever comes first, identical coverage to factory warranty) is $2,393.34 from Luke Teys of Southern Classic LR, or $2366.14 from Meaghan Roulston of Platinum Direct. Can all be done over the phone. Contact details in the thread. Suzuki Vitara 3dr

Hi Mark,
I am looking at buying a D3 V6 SE and see that you have had a few things done under warranty, could you tell me roughly at what mileage these things happened? I am looking at an 06 SE with only 30,000 klms on it so the problems may not have surfaced as yet. With all the reading I am starting to have doubts about getting one, would you buy another one knowing what you now know? Can you tell me where you brought aftermarket warranty from who it is through and how much was it?
I will only use the D3 for gravel roads and a daily driver for my wife, I have a very modified D1 V8 manual, with front and rear air lockers, 35's and we use this one for the rough stuff.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
Regards Peter (from Tassie)

An 06 with only 30,000kms on it.............I know Tassie is a small place but that's amazing.
Mine is an 07 with 98,000kms on it and I've only had very minor warranty stuff go wrong - driving lights not working - the odd rattle etc - all fixed up on time with no problems.....I may be one of the lucky ones - I don't know.......but I do know that I love driving my D3.

Hi again, went into the Dealer this morning & they acted like they had never heard of a End of Warranty inspection - I showed them a copy of "Oldsalts" post where his dealer had invited him in for a free inspection & they said they had never heard of such an idea. interesting .
After much humming & harring they have booked it in for next week for a checkup.
I went & saw the sales guy about an extended warrantee & the going price at the moment from Allianz is $3590 !!!!!!!! I watched him do the quote on the computer in front of me. He says he could probably get it down to about 3300 with a bit of haggling !!
It must be all those claims you've been making Mark that has wacked up the premiums . I will try a couple of those other contacts to see if the price comes down. I wonder if there is a difference for engine type & spec level (probably).
Thanks for the AULRO link will try following up with meaghan. (the price of $3590 sounds like its standard as a few people quoted this price in their posts )

George.. I have sent PM.
My D3 comes out of lease in December and I am going to pay it out and keep it for at least another 2 years. It has done 70K now and believe it or not..... I don't like diesels.... so no D4 for me.
One of the reasons I am hanging off is that business is really crook at present and I am watching my spending.. plus; did I mention that i don't like diesels?
I would love a V8 petrol D4... if you could buy it in an SE and not be reamed by Land Rover for around $120K plus for an HSE
If they ever produce another petrol powered D4 in SE trim level then I would be a starter I guess.
I love the car.. but the reliability is an issue.. although to be honest, most of the problems that happened under the factory warranty were just repaired as a matter of course when the car was being serviced.... your car is ready and by the way, we have replaced your lower ball joints. (I left that one off the original list)
Cheers

I have just taken delivery of a new D4 SE 3 litre (last week) and paid about $3,300 for the Allianze extended warranty from the dealer in Perth. The car now has the equivalent of a full "manufacturer's" warranty for 6 years or 175,000 Kms. My wife has a 3 year old VW Polo (which has had its issues by the way) and she has taken an equivalent Allianze warranty (about 4 weeks ago) at a cost of $1,700. Given that the D4 is about 90k on the road and the Polo is about 27 k the deal for the LR seemed a good one to me. Land Rover Series IIA 1967

Hi thanks for the reply, it has only been used as a car really on trips from the north to the south of Tassie, its done no off road or towing at all and no short trips to the shops or anything as they have 2 other cars. But I was wondering about an after market warranty (worth it or not) as it has not done many klms it probably hasn't had any of the usual problems that go wrong, I don't mind the small stuff but diffs and gear boxes yikes.
Cheers

The price of the Allianz extended warranty is indeed around $3500 rrp, but Luke & Meaghan are cutting down their commissions to give you the discount. I asked how this was possible and it is totally at their discretion so they are going for volume rather than margin. Suzuki Vitara 3dr
