Parking sensors only come on when you press foot brake?

One annoying feature seems to be that the parking sensors only come on if in reverse gear and have the foot brake on. Is it meant to work like this or is there something wrong with mine?

The parking sensors are normally activated by selecting reverse (or pressing the button on the dash) and remain active for a short while afterwards, there should be no need to press the brake as well - after all you need the sensors before you've stopped.

I cant think of any reason why they would only work with the brake pedal pressed, unless that's another symptom of defective brake light bulb syndrome Confused

is that because even though you selected reverse, as the park brake is on, you "shouldnt" be going anywhere?

I must admit, I hadn't thought about the EPB, (probably cos I seldom use it,) so I just went and checked - and yes, the parking sensors are inhibited while the EPB is engaged but spring into life as soon as it's released, (while in reverse,) whether using the manual release via the lever or pressing the loud pedal - and whether the brake is pressed or not.

On my vehicle the sensors are not activated until the epd is off and the foot pedal is pressed. The orange light comes on and when the pedal is released the sensors stay active whilst still in reverse. I thought is was just poor software but now it seems this is not the same on all vehicles, mine is 2005 model.

I can see some logic in this.

Even though mine's a manual, I don't select reverse without my foot on the brake. For safety reasons, I can't imagine doing anything else.

Its difficult to move off on a gradient (hill start) using the foot brake, I tend to do this but my wife always uses the parking brake.
