Total loss of everything whilst driving
OK, people of great forum I again seek your help.
Today I was driving down a single carriageway A road doing about 60 with a queue of cars behind when I lost everything. It appears the engine just cut out, I lost power steering and started coasting. After quickly hitting the hazzards and pulling over I manage to get out the way of the traffic behind without taking a rear end shunt.
After putting the car into park, I removed the key and restarted. Engine fired up first time and I continued without issue.
When I lost power the dash was dead. No warning lights, no message display and no annoying bings or bongs. Before hitting the hazzards I first tried the indicators which were dead and like I said no power stearing as well. Al;most like the ignition was switched off.
Anybody had these symptoms before? Any ideas what it could be?
I will take it to the dealers tomorrow for them to check for fault codes but it would be good to hear if this has happened before.

Earth strap, aint a clue where it is, but for a motor to die it definately could be in that direction

Battery connections all seem OK - well at least they wont move when I tug at them.
Earth strap, or a general earth problem could be a possibility. I have over the past couple of weeks had an intermittent fault on the front right indicator. Sometimes it works other times not. I had assumed a faulty bulb or bulb socket, just never got as far as testing this out. But I a wider issue is an option.For details on the next Kielder Safari click visit the Kielder Safari website

No idea on this but if the engine was running and the battery was disconnected, the alternator would still be running unless the electronics cause a total shutdown in this situation.
Will be interesting to know what it was.

Ian, a turbo failure shouldn't cause the whole thing to shut down.
When I had my turbo fail, the accelerator pedal 'went long' and chucking out lots of grey smoke.
Eventually it would only drive at walking pace with foot near to floor.
Upon a stop, wait and re-start everything drove as normal again for days ...
...until it was diagnosed as turbo failure.
I'd get it double checked....... always on the road less travelled 🚧

Flinty welcome to CFT!! Turbo fault code could be a coincidence but if your car's in warranty worth getting it changed.
PS Of course it's in warranty, if it's a G4 and has a turbo it's an 08er! At least yours has the courtesy to fail before warranty dies.

I agree Ron, that was one thing that didn't make sense.

My G4 used to do this on a regular basis, after being remaped? only 4000 miles on clock and turbo fault codes showing, turbo changed still the same.good luck with getting this cured.

That does not make sense, well it doesn't to me.
How can a knackered turbo cause what sounds like complete electrical failure.

That's assuming it only has one thing wrong at once, it could be having a complicated tantrum!

I suspect that I have a couple of problems; the electrical one and by coincidence the turbo which is on its way out although for a car with less then 20K seems very strange.
I guess the process is to fix the faults that are known and then hunt for the other.
Given the car has only had its electrical gremlin once and it cannot be reproduced it could take a little hunting down.For details on the next Kielder Safari click visit the Kielder Safari website

flinty, mine has shown a P0299 fault code recently (Low Turbo/Supercharger Boost Pressure). I did have the same code last September but it went. I'm sure Disco_Mikey said if it's the turbo there will be another two turbo fault codes listed (can't remember off the top of my head which ones) but P0299 could also be caused by a nacked fuel filter.
