MPG - one extreme to the other...
Hi all,
Extremes of mpg in the last week. One day I filled the tank before a journey down the M6 (driving solo) and filled it again at Taunton. Trip computer reckoned I averaged 38.9mpg (yes you read that right!) and my brim to brim calculation calculated it as 38.0mpg.
I was driving steadily but even so I impressed myself.
Not so good two days later when I towed our twin axle caravan across to Bala for the weekend with family and loads of gear on board. Averaged just 20 mpg.
What a great car the D3 is though!MY11 Disco 4 SDV6 HSE

I've had trips round Bala where the trip computer was reporting an average of 6 mpg - mind you that was off-roading.......... I see no ships........

I have a Corolla hire car at the moment and in normal local driving I am getting 11 L/100km.
The D3 gets 12.5. Not bad for 2.5 tonne.
The Corolla has to work hard.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Anyone know how the MPG is worked out - is it averaged between re-sets (service) or what ?/ I can't find how to reset it for a trip only the milage. Same for the average speed.... Anyone know ?
LurkWhy do I have 2 big hands when my D3 maintenance requires small hands and at least three of them ?

Hmm well I am on 21.6 mpg with general driving with some towing over 240 miles. It has to be said, live in a hilly area and watch the mpg tumble. I can get 24 mpg towing but sub 20 mpg round and about the south pennines. Long nmotoprway trips doing 80 mph in 6th I can get 29 mpg.
manual btw.

The daily commutes etc average 28, a decent run with a mix of motorway and A roads tends to see 30/31, Was most impressed on a recent trip to Birmingham with an empty twin axle car trailer and back up with a car on it averaged out at 35.9 over 762 miles.....which was a huge improvement over my 3.2 DiD Shogun when towing the same trailer and load (about 25mpg)

38.9MPG sounds extraordinary !! Even with a remap and EGR valves blocked I'm getting 29mpg at best on a motorway trip and 26mpg on general A road driving. What's the secret ?

Remember if these numbers are based on the trip computer take them with a dose of salts. It can over estimate mpg by 2 - 5 mpg, strangely never seen it overestimate it.
I had 3 Audi's - and they all overestimated, just as bad as my D3.
Daft thing is, both the Audi's and LR know how fast they are going a lot more accurately than they seem to use for the MPG calculation, which seems to use the speedo value, rather than the true value.Mark.
