I have a 2006 TDV6 SE with 49k miles.
On Sunday, driving home, the rev counter starting jumping up when at constant speed suspecing a slipping clutch, a brake sensor amber warning light came on and the gear selector stopped displaying the correct gear. IT got gradually worse over the next 20-30 miles with really bad clutch slippage. When a gear is displayed, it is 1-2 gears below that you are in. By the time I got home, the clutch went to the floor and stayed there and I could not select any gear at all, having to reverse the car on the starter motor.
The gearbox seems to be fine but difficult ot tell as you cannot really select a gear easily.
I suspect the clutch is gone but the dealer have just stated the gearbox need to be stripped. As an angineer, I do not beleive it, nor can I beleive the clutch has worn out at 49k as I have never towed nor slipped it hard?
Any ideas? Carbon Footprint - Who cares?

If the clutch is staying to the floor, then I can't possibly see how it can be the gearbox itself. It sounds as though the whole clutch mechanism has failed, perhaps needing a new flywheel (common issue on earlier D3 Manuals).
Is it a LR dealer or an independant who have said it needs a new gearbox?
It could of course just be a knackered clutch cable (Or are they hydraulic) but it may be something more simple Bodsys Brake Bible

When clutch pedal goes to the floor and stays there, it is usually a sign of a bad slave clutch cylinder (the one on the gearbox). The second suspect would be the fluid line or the master cylinder.
I would start by checking the fluid reservoir, and if the level is low, check the slave cylinder for leaks

Exactly the same faults as mine had at 14000 miles, new clutch was required, replaced week later as the dealer replaced the clutch but did not do the fly wheel at same time. Both covered under LR warranty MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

OK everyone problem solved.....at gross expense!
Local L/R dealer dropped box out and the clutch was completely destroyed, in fact, only 3 of the original 7-8 clutch plate paddles were left on the plate. Dual mass flywheel was also hot-spotted and too much free play so also changed out together with the combined thrust release/clutch slave cylinder and clutch cover too. That would explain the peddle going to the floor as well!
Stated the had never seen one so bad.
This is a curious failure as I do not tow, only use occassionslly offroad and is mainly used for commuting and normal country road driving so ti looks like the clutch can go anytime after 49k miles!
Anyway, seems fine now but it was costapacket stuff ! Carbon Footprint - Who cares?
