Ducati,

Do you normally keep the recirculate switch on? If so, be sure to turn it off every now and then and run it in the "off" position for some time. When off, it pulls fresh air into the system and will dry up the condensor (evaporator?) - thus eliminating the smelly-sock odor. This was also a problem on my X5 and this procedure was provided as a fix. There are also commercial-grade cleaners that can be sprayed into the unit to de-funkify the system. Check out something called frigi-fresh.

Handy Tip...

Use the re-circulate feature to cool the car down quicker on a hot day and then turn it off once your getting cooler (well we are all pretty cool in our DISCO3's). That way you don't draw in hot air from outside while trying to cool hot the air inside... just make the system work harder and take longer to cool down the interior air.

Thanks for all the helpful info, but having tested the LR3, I also tested the RRS. Long story short. Love at first sight. Bought a Zambezi Silver RRS 4.4 which incidentally has excellent a/c also.

Certainly has the looks and interior feel.

However I've 2 very practical reasons why I've got to go with the LR3:
-need the 7 seats!
-cannot justify the extra 30% price (no matter how I do my sums)

Enjoy it

CONGRATS on the RRS! I love the look and the luxury seats... Too bad I need room for 3 dogs in the back, and the extra ground clearance... Or I'd have one!! Here in the US the RRS with lux package is about 10% more than my LR3. Doable if you've already paid this much Shocked

As to my AC and recirc: I leave it on "Auto" all the time and there is no control over recirc... The system leaves it on recirc all the time if it's hot, and the recirc button has no effect.

I do turn the compressor off (with the ECON switch) a few blocks before getting home, with the intent of drying out the compressor. This has solved the sock smell in all my previous Rovers... and other cars.

I should point out: the sock smell only occurs when the AC is off... When it's on, everything is as normal.

I wonder if I have a plugged drain from mud-plugging

Easy way to check is to look and see if there is a puddle of water underneath when you have stopped for afew minutes.

My AC is always on... seems the default for the car and doesn't seem to affect the MPG. I think in order to keep all that glass condensation free its set to be on all the time.

Never had any odd smells except when the sheep are in the back Wink

It has been well over 90 here the past few days, and my LR3 (Tonga Green) cools off very well. I made sure that the screens are covering the glass, and i leave the windows open a small bit. I leave the temp control on 64 then raise it to 68 when it is comfortable. I set the rear a/c controls to match the front controls. I was a bit worried too, but I am pleased!

I mark my territory everytime I park!

Did you know you can access and pull out the air/heat filter?? Open the lower glove box, press the tabs on the left and right to release the glove box and then you can find an actual air filter.

In Wiltshire over the weekend with 30c temps and the car cools quickly and stayed very cool. In fact the passengers complain it gets too cold !

So I have every faith that the AC is efficient. Especially as the car is so large inside.

I'm in Austin, it is fine to me. I got the windows tinted professionally in Austin, including the sun roof. It's barely rained in months, with temps in triple digits, I've been very satisfied with the A/C, however, A/C Seats would have been nice.

After a recent trip to a very dusty country, and many miles of following others in a dust cloud, I started complaining about the aircon not working right. It was cooling, but there wasn't much airflow.
Pulled out the filter and it had more than a handful of powdery dust in it when I tapped it out! Looks like this aircon filter really works hard.
Something you need to check if you offroad a lot, particularly with the service intervals being so far apart.

BTW, the engine air filter was even worse. Didn't seem to affect performance or economy though. I suppose they would have both been replaced during maintenance at the dealer. (we live in hope)
