Or that the calipers have partly seized on (had 3 out of 4 on mine and 1 on Swmbo's car). Bad vibration one symptom, check carefully for hot wheel.

EPB or brake pads binding would be my guess. Have you had EPB adusted or the pads changed recently?“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Well the noise comes and goes.
Had the brake EPB unit replaced and shoes adjusted at last service.
The wheel temps seem normal on both sides.
Starting to think it might be tyre issues.
The car has Pirelli Scorpion ATRs on it and they have done around 35,000 k .
The dealer service manager asked if the tyres have feathered edges.. a quick check today and they look OK.
But I suddenly realised today that the sound is a lot like the noise of the knobby tyres on my bike.
I am wondering if it is a harmonics problem when both tyres get "in phase" as it were. A corner or two and the noise goes away.
Anyhow, I'll get under the old girl tomorrow and see if her balls are seized or can swing freely.
Cheers

I had a problem on my wifes Grand cherokee a while back. There was a hell of a vibration and it felt as if the wheels wanted to go in different directions. it was so bad she refused to drive it because it didnt feal safe.
I had all 4 wheels balanced just to see if that helped, and it solved the problem completly. May be its that simple Duncan

my monies on EPB shoes having been over adjusted, had exactly the same vibration when comin back from south of france the year before last, fully laddened so well up to the max gross vehicle weight, a key to this is your comment "comin back from dinner with some friends" I assume yer a 7 seater
Only did the vibration under heavy load conditions, best thing to do is get 5 or 7 people in the vehicle and then see whether it replicates the same vibration, pull over and then feel the wheel hub, that will indicate which side is binding or you can visually check to see whether the hub has gone a dark reddish colour to show its been cookin
