18" tyre option help for trip around oz
Hi all
I have the standard 255 60 /R18 and need to replace in preparation for a trip around OZ. I will be towing a camper trailer and was looking at coopers and mickey's but they both don’t make 18" to suite.
I know that there are the BFG ATZ and the Goodyear Silent Armour but wanted to know if anyone can recommend a top tyre for the task ahead...
Thanks
Ben

Most have had good results from the GG ATs but sidewalls are not as good as Coopers. Coopers do an HT+ that is bullet proof compared to the Wranglers. I had HT+s and never had a puncture despite digging a few screws and nails out of the treads. Just the tread pattern is not as aggressive as the ATs. They should work well for touring I noticed they handled better than the ATs do and are quiet.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Thanks for the responses and I will have a look at the coopers. it is good to know that I can use 265 tyres as well as cooper ATR and Goodyear Silent Armour both offer this size..

18in wheels
Hi Ben.
I had BFG AT's put on from new by the dealer. They're now at approx 40Ks and roughly half worn. Done a lot of off-road work and fair bit of time towing a Campomatic camper trailer (approx 1,000Kilo's). Had zero problems with them. Bit of tyre noise, but that goes with the territory. I'd certainly be happy to put another set on. Size, 265x65x18. Has a slightly larger diameter, so a bit more ground clearance. They just touch on the inside of the wheel well (chassis rail) on full lock, standard height.
Cheers,

Hi Martin
Thanks for the info and I will have a closer look at the BFG's as I agree on your point with the noise as a tough tyre is more important for me.

Just be aware that the BFG's are still illegal in some Australian states when fitted to a D3. They are oversized.06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

bmalpass,
Pirelli do a Scorpioin ATR in 255 60R 18 (the right size), not sure about the pricing but from most reports I have read on this and other they seem to be very capable both on and off road.
I am getting closer to a new set tryes once the OEM wear out and these will most likely be at the top of my list.
As I said absolutely no personal experience but they are the right size and see to be well regarded.Regards,
George

I fitted Goodyear Wrangler Silent Armour in October 2009 and have been very happy with them.
Two serious trips since....Vic High Country with lots of heavy duty bush track driving and Adel/Thredbo/Adel last week with lots of black top driving and a bit of off road.
They perform as good as any 'compromise' tyre when off road and are no noiser on the highway than the OEM Wranglers. Bit early to tell but so far they are wearing well.

Silent Armours
I have heard good things on the silent armour (are yours 17 or 18) and was keen however after speaking to a goodyear specalist he said that I could not get a 18" with the weight rating required and with a camper trailer in tow I have decided to go with the GG AT2's. Have got them for $375 each for 5 including fit and ballance...which seems to be a great price from previous comments and forums.
I still cant believe the limits when trying to get 18" tyres given the D3 has been 4x4 of the year for so long.
Thanks all and will let you know how they work out.
Cheers
Ben

What is the load rating of the 18 inch ones? It needs to be 109 or greater, This rating should take into account the 3.5 tonne towing capacity.“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

the silent armour's are 265 60 R18 109T however the other tyre sizes are a R not a T rating (not sure on the difference) however the bloke at goodyear i spoke to said that it was not rated high enough for the D3 and along with being a 265 vs 255 i decided on the GG AT2 with a 255 60 R18 112 rating. Shame as I was very keen on the goodyear as they have posative feedback from 95% of users and forums I found.

The placard says no!
The T and V ratings are for speed not load.
T is 190Kph
V is 240Kph
Placard says min load rating 109 and min speed rating H.
H is 220Kph“There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Tyre Sizes
I have a 2009 Range Rover Sport which has 255 55 R18 tyres, it is the last of the old model with the 2.7.
I note that the new ones have 255 60 R18 tyres and all the other tyre options 19 and 20 end up with the same outside diameter.
I thought that the Discos pre 2010 would be the same as my RRS with 225 55 R18, is this true and if so what do you do about the change in speedo reading?
