Aftermarket fitted reverse camera/sat nav |
|
Hi
I recently purchased a Disco 4 TDV6 (love it) but made a mistake by not getting the sat nav option (large colour screen). Mine only has a small mono screen. I have small kids and really need a reversing camera for my driveway and despite various posts on this site circling the subject, I cant seem to get to the bottom of what is possible in terms of retro fitting a larger screen so it looks as original as possible (ie fits in the dash) for use as a reversing camera /sat nav etc. I am in Brisbane.
I am hoping someone can help.
Thanks in advance

Hi Pup,
Probably not answering your question but I have obtained a D4 reversing camera, which I plan to feed to my Garmin nuvi.
There are many options.

What have you bought? D3 or D4? Fill in your profile.
I am assuming D4 and you have a small display screen?
Looking at getting one and I think the factory Sat nav is silly money and they will slug you huge amounts for updates.
I know it is possible to move the small display screen and it has been put where the cupholders are.
The best solution would be to integrate the display into a screen via an aux in option or even a window within screen if you connect up an in car PC. This would give you the most flexiblility and options for use.
Anyone know what type of input the small screen has? I PMed wiggs but I think he is away. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

VMS make an in car GPS and has reversing camers. I have the VMS 430, which is portable screen but I understand that that can also be fitted with a reversing camera. It has memory map pre loaded and I have used it for a lot of off road navigation. I think the in screen model is pricy, but nowhere near LR's offering. Have a look at their website and see if this is what you are after. Take the road less traveled. Dual battery system.ORS drawers,LR cargo Barrier.ARB Bull bar, side protection bars,Mickey Thompson ATR's 17" rims, Rear wheel carrier, radiator guard TPMS Mitchell Bros Tow Hitch LR RAI Steel Rims , GME UHF, Off Road GPS, Llams (yet to be fitted)

Hi Sorry I thought I had done this. Done now. It is a Disco 4 and yes it has the small display screen which just shows radio and phone. No sat nav.

Hi Bushwanderer
Is it a genuine LR camera? Is it possible to wire it to the same place on the tailgate(under handle I think)
Thanks
Fred

Hi Maplepup,
I have the same car and same problem since March this year, and have been on the lookout for a solution since December 2009 (when I ordered the car)
You can get a genuine D4 camera (with electronically superimposed reversing lines!) from a user on this forum known as "Wiggs" and he will tell you the price which is around 1/4 of the price of ordering it from LR Australia. Just PM him. The camera you want is the one for the non-surround system (which has a different connector). It will fit to any 3rd party screen (cheapest is around $20 from eBay) and you have options in size, colour, resolution, and fitting (rear-vision clip-on, different brackets etc).
I haven't installed one yet as I am still waiting for a better, more integrated solution. If you come across references to the GVIF interface, this is only if you have the factory sat-nav touchscreen installed, so once again no use to us. Ideally I would like to have a replacement screen to the mono one, and for it to accept multiple inputs including the original signal, a reverse camera, GPS, and one more AV.
Lastly, in passing traffic I have noticed a Ford Focus had the same radio/screen so that could be another point to start researching.
If you find anything, please let me know.
Cheers,

Hi Fred,
Yes it is the genuine LR camera. I obtained it from Slimer on this site.
It comes as a complete tailgate handle assembly. Just specify your colour if you don't want to reuse your current handle.

They may have gone by then (only 8 for sale?)
Good find though.
PS Did you get the RAI waterproofed? “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Hi Andrew,
No - couldn't be bothered!
I will take a tarp for the front of the car and hopefully we won't go through too much deep water.

You'll probably be ok as long as you don't stop. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

True Ken - which is not a problem for me as my Sony in-dash DVD player does both PAL and NTSC. Others - beware.
