Upgrading Standard Steering Wheel to Multi Function |
|
Hi All,
I've got a standard 08 LR D3 base spec and I'm wondering if it's possible (and easy enough!) to upgrade my standard steering wheel to multi-function, mainly for the radio & aux. I've read a few posts and I think all I need are the Audio and Cruise Control switches, but I'm not sure so I said I'd post up here and see what the experts have to say
I'm assuming the cruise control switches would be unused, as I don't have that option (or can you upgrade that too ) so can I just get the Audio switches
Any advice would be much appreciated,
Oh yeah, a few prices would be nice
Cheers,
Dave

Welcome Dave
Upgrading the audio controls is a sinch so just order a set of them and its easy to fit. All you need is a coat hanger Price them up locally first if you want but drop The Large One a pm aswell, you'll probably be pleasantly surprised with his price
The cruise ones can go in at the same time if you want, kinda future proof if you like You're right in that they need to be enabled. Your options would be that there are a couple of the UK members who are over in Ireland from time to time who may be able to do it for you - not too sure who on here in Ireland can do it at the mo but no doubt someone will know.

Hi tanters,
based on the blaaland comment, I'm guessin' you're not too far at all good to hear it's straight forward enough, are we talking 'plug-n-play' as in some of the other posts I came across or do I have to do a bit of rewiring/soldering?
I've been onto TLO alright for some Front & Rear Lamp Guards (which I fitted myself with no hassle at all thanks to DISCO3 ), and he's reasonable enough considering what I was quoted locally, so I'll drop him a pm and see what the story is - it's just the switches I'm looking for yeah?
When you say 'they need to be enabled' does that mean they won't actually work until they are, (enabled that is) or that the dash just won't have a light comming on etc?
Cheers,
Dave.

you've got your hands dirty already I see
The audio controls should be plug and play, the cruise ones are plug but no play until enabled.
If you're scootin around town on Saturday I can have a quick look and see what's required before you order off TLO, only takes a few minutes. MInes a 05 base so loads of connectors for all sorts hidden away, I know they did alter the looms for later models so worth checking first I suppose. Multi functional steering wheel |
|
Daveyd,
I am getting the switches fitted to the steering wheel tomorrow, I will post up a response once they are fitted. AFAIK the switches can be added and then activated, basically the ecu has to be told they are fitted. If all goes well (which i am sure it will!) I will forward on any details you need, i.e. parts numbers etc.

As Tanters says, the audio switches will work and be backlit straight away after plugging them in....easy peasy and no activation needed whatsoever
The cruise control buttons also need plugging in and will be backlit with no problems. The cruise control function usually needs activating for them to work.
Some, however, have worked fully without being activated whilst others have worked but without illuminating the CC icon/lamp on the dash.
If you can, it's worth sticking them in too...if they work great, if not, then wait until you can find someone with a Faultmate MSV-2 (Multi-vehicle) or Autologic to enable the setting for you. 2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE Auto Buckingham Blue

I have to say - this site is the business altogether
Cheers for all the replies/posts
@tanters - yeah, I think I've got the mod bug - I even had a crack at hooking up my ipod to the AUX of the Radio - worked a treat, all thanks to posts and step-by-step guides here on the site And that'd be great, I'd make it a point to be in town alright, if it suited you of course, just pick a time but seeing as the rugby is on at 5:45, any chance you might be scootin around town yourself before then
@okennedy - any details at all would be greatly appreciated, I'm very new to all this and the last thing I need is getting the wrong parts n stuff. Cheers!
@PaulP - I can't believe I might actually have Cruise Control by pluggin' in a switch and enabling - and possibly without if I'm lucky !! I know it's only a small thing but I think all this is great.
This will probably sound stupid to you all, so apologies in advance, but the impression I'm getting (probably as I'm a relative newbie) with all you can do with and to a Discovery, it reminds me of "seriously advanced LEGO Technics" - endless possibilities !!!!!
Thanks again to everyone - can't wait to see if it'll all pan out.......
Dave.

Hiya daveyd
Not at all.
The current situation regarding modification possibilities on the D3 is not entirely endless, however as you will have noticed, on this board, there is an awful lot of support and appreciation for anyone trying to expand them.
This has ultimately resulted in this board taking quantum leaps forward in this area and currently being the Mecca of all things D3. As the developer and introducer to the benefits and possibility of CCF editing, i am most proud to be a part of that in some small way.
Most notably, at a point when everyone else thought upgrading a base spec vehicle like your own, to something more was impossible, i kinda took your lego approach, in which i regard the vehicle as but a collection of bits that simply needed dissasembling and then reassembling with different bits.
It's really now quite an old post, but it really led the way to inspiring many others to do lesser or part upgrades of retro adding Sat Nav or RSE that are now so common.
I am therefore sure you will love reading about this, my own ultimate base spec upgrade, and hope it inspires you.

Hi BBS SPY,
I read your post last night and all I can say is Amazing stuff and I totally agree that this site has such a wealth of knowledge that it can only but act as an enabler and inspiration to any Land Rover owner.
I have a confession to make, of sorts though, up to 6 months ago, I would never have owned a LR or 4X4 for that matter, and when I made the purchase of the D3 I really wasn't up to speed on the different models and specs and it was more on a practical basis i changed (I became a dad for the first time and the Audi TT really wasn't child friendly and the D3 suited my budget and I like the look of it )
I came across this site purely by accident, investigating iPod connectivity, and I couldn't believe how extensive the site was and now after reading your post (which I thoroughly enjoyed) my appreciation for the members of this site has gone to a whole new level - I thought I was great hooking up my iPod, but sure you have to start somewhere
Many thanks for the post - but I'm nowhere near the confidence and ability levels to even consider attempting what you have achieved
My next little venture (as you probably saw in the posts) is fitting Audio & Cruise Control switches, so fingers crossed that'll be straightforward enough - actually, I came across other posts talking about Air-Bags etc - is that something I need to read more about, as I thought it was gonna be a straight 'plug 'n' play'?
Once I have the switches installed I'll see how much my local dealer will charge to activate the Cruise Control or if thats too expensive I'll see if any members over here can do the job a bit cheaper
Thaks again BBS SPY, great stuff
Dave.

Your local dealer won't be able to activate the cruise control if it needs doing....you'll need someone who can read, edit and write the CCF as mentioned below

O Kennedy
Hi O Kennedy,
I fitted the switches this morning but the cruise control needs to be enabled, so i don't suppose you know of any Irish Members out there who own a Faultmate MSV-2 or Autologic who could sort me out?
I'd obviously travel to their place of business/residence and hopefully they wouldn't charge too much.
Hope all went according to plan with your own upgrade.
Cheers,
Dave.
